Rejected…

i feel that washu cared more about stats than a holistic overview, i mean cause its application was a piece of cake

like literally they asked for no supplemental questions nor essays whatsoever

they simply had the common app and the common app essay

SO…
to everyone REJECTED like me,

do not worry, because some other top university will realize our good candidacy

this decision-viewing season has merely begun

I was rejected, here are some rough breakdowns of my stats:

GPA: roughly 3.92 UW
ACT: 35 (one sitting)
SAT subject tests: 800 Chem, 800 Bio, 720 Japanese (all one sitting)
ECs: many pertaining to Japanese language and athletics. Some service.

About me: white male from a tiny private school in the Midwest. No legacy or first gen or any hooks.

I’m not too disappointed by this; WashU was not one of my top schools but I feel for the people who were rejected and I congratulate everyone who got in. The blow of this was definitely lessened by the fact that I got a Likely Letter from Cornell a few days ago  chances are that’s where I will be attending. Schools work in mysterious ways: Cornell absolutely loved me ( i guess) whereas washU just wasn’t feeling me as much. To those who got rejected, just keep this in mind and know that the process is very unpredictable and things that surprise you can happen. I honestly never thought I could make it to the Ivy League but here I am. Hang in there.

Son was waitlisted. He applied for Comp Sci major in the Engineering school.

35 ACT (36S, 35M, 35E, 34R)
3.91 UW/ 4.27 W
Top 3% of class of 625; one of 12 students graduating with an Honors Diploma
Will graduate from high school with a 2-yr degree from community college (dual enrollment)
7 AP classes this year; 7 AP classes prior two years…all 4s and 5s

Lots of EC and leadership:
Captain and lead programmer for two robotics teams - one qualified for World Championship last year, captain of mock trial team (5 years of competing), National Regional Science Bowl team/3rd place in state, Speech Contest, 200+ hours of volunteering mostly teaching robotics/coding/leadership for middle school and elementary kids, selected for two regional leadership development programs, co-led Model UN team, NHS, etc.

And a bunch of recognition/awards.

White male, Iowa, applied for financial aid but knew EFC was too high to get anything. He applied for Danforth and engineering scholarships - didn’t advance. Without merit, he couldn’t go to WashU.

I think he was a little surprised. Now he’s afraid the other schools he’s waiting to hear from are going to reject him – all highly selective privates. MIT, which deferred him in Dec, rejected him on Wed. Five public schools have admitted him, given merit (3 are OOS) and offered him a space in their Honors Colleges. I think he’ll go to Purdue. We were so impressed with the school and their comp sci program…I think it’s the best place for him. We’ll see what the next two weeks bring.

@ostargazingo, I am impressed with your positive attitude about not getting into Wash U. You have a great option with Cornell and will do great thingsl. Gambatte ne!

@pro@procrastinator, agree that it appears that Wash U has definitely been trending towards caring about upping their student stats. Yet, many with high standardized test scores have also been turned down or waitlisted like @1sttimethrougj, so who knows what they are looking for. So many qualified students lost will be another school’s gain.

@itsanadventure, We also made that long drive and S interviewed up in St. Louis. I just read Emory results come out next week on March 22nd. Good luck to your daughter on her Emory interview!

To all the rest who did gain admission to Wash U, congrats and good luck!

DS Rejected for Political Science:
1570 SAT/35 ACT/12 AP’s - all 4’s and 5’s so far
SAT Subject Tests - 740 & 770
GPA 3.9 UW
Plenty of EC’s and leadership and a part time job.

National Merit Finalist
No demonstrated interest due to distance and time constraints. Did not apply for FA.
First rejection. Got into Northeastern and UNC Chapel Hill and many Honors colleges at major state schools, Was a Chancellors Nominee at Pitt but not selected as a finalist. He has some fabulous scholarship offers elsewhere so all is good. Still waiting to hear from 3 more schools but financially they likely won’t be an option.

Hey! Did anyone else get invited to the summer program?

D rejected, not surprised because of sat of 1420. Gpa is 3.9 unweighted, 4.3 weighted, valedictorian small, rural school of 302, but she also attends area governors school. Lots of music Ecs, all state, youth symphonic orchestra etc. lots of ap, dual enrollment. Do you think she has a shot at Emory and or Vanderbilt or will sat Hold her back?

I don’t think anyone can reasonably predict what will happen with these other schools. I think once your numbers are in the ballpark, it becomes a crapshoot. I can tell you that my D (1480 SAT 4.0) was rejected ED1 from Vanderbilt and accepted yesterday RD by WashU. No word from Emory yet. I would suggest staying optimistic and understand that there is no way to predict what they will do.

Correct

Thanks, my D applied RD to all her colleges and the waiting is brutal. Accepted to Va Tech (we are instate VA) still waiting on UVA, William and Mary, University of Richmond, Emory and Vanderbilt. Lord help me!!!

By looking at the pure stats (GPA, ACT, even EC list) some of the rejection/acceptances can seem surprising. And as another post mentioned, essay requirements aren’t near as deep as some other schools (i.e. Stanford). In a way this is a bit of a lottery as some suggest. To those accepted, I’m not saying you were “lucky”, everyone accepted has an impressive resume and should be proud. But for those denied, realize that you are not ‘less’ qualified than many who made it. The chips just fell where they did. You have a great opportunity to be extremely successful through a different path. Once your in college, your HS transcript is not as important, once in grad school, your undergrad is not as important, once in your career, your college degree is not as important, and once in your 2nd job, your 1st job accomplishments are more important. You don’t have to go to WashU or any other Top20 elite to be successful.

But to those accepted, congrats!

no one can beat your experience Ivy !!!

Rejected for bio-
IB predicted: 45/45
ACT: 33
SAT II: BIO(790) CHEM (800) MATH II (790)

Rank: our school doesn’t rank but according to my principal I’m placed first

Ethnicity: Asian Indian
Income bracket: 40-60k (I asked for financial aid so maybe that must have pushed me off their list)

W GPA: 4.34 (took 14 AP classes, and mostly all rest were pre-ap)

SAT I: 1540
SAT II: Math 2: 780, Chemistry: 690
AP scores: Got one 5, and a bunch of 4’s and 3’s (also low, during ap exam season everyyear, i would study really hard, but i had to be hospitalized or sent to the emergency room multiple times for pushing myself too much)

Race: Asian
Gender: Male
State: California
Major: Chemical/biomolecular engineering, second choice is chemistry

Essays:
Common app: wrote about my illness and how it influenced me to pursue a medical career.

I showed no interest and I think that’s what might have kept me out? Also I didn’t do the ZeeMee video questions on the application, which may have also shown that I had no interest in the school?

Did anyone show no interest and not do the zeemee and still get accepted?

After seeing this, I’m really discouraged about my chances for Rice, northwestern, and vanderbilt :frowning:

My D is on Spring break with frined and won’t check the portal until she returns tomorrow. I checked USPS Informed Delivery this morning and a 4:05 a.m. scan showed up in packages. Ran the id number through USPS Tracking site and it showed it is a UPS Sure Post delivery but doesn’t show point of origin. Checked UPS tacking site and it says no tracing info available yet.

Has anyone else seen similar USPS results or received a swag pack via UPS, or have any insight they could share?

@GTDAD My stepson was admitted a couple of weeks ago and invited to the scholarship weekend on March 22-24. He also got the formal acceptance letter via the portal yesterday. Today, in our USPS delivery email we got the following note about a package. Can’t be sure it’s Wash U but if its the same as your daughter’s that’s a good sign. Here it is: PRO STAR FULFILLMENT/ PRO STAR LOGISTICS-UT/ENDICIA
