Do we know what percentage of deferred kids will be accepted? Any deferred stats for this year?
Interesting article from the Thresher to read while waiting for the decisions to come out. http://www.ricethresher.org/article/2018/03/rice-applications-top-20000-for-the-first-time
I didn’t submit subject test, I hope that doesn’t affect me getting in.
@PBern123 they’re optional now so it won’t
thats ill advised logic, some essays for colleges are optional but there is a reason they are there and it does affect your chances if you do not do them. @MaybeHarvard2022
There is context here that I think some may be forgetting.
~40% of Rice students are from Texas. They don’t list the breakdown from the Houston area but I would expect it to be a large portion of that 40%.
Harvey hit in late August right when a lot of students where scheduled to take SAT 2 tests on August 26th. My DD’s testing center closed on the Friday before the test. Then the storm hit. Lots of students were dealing with the aftermath. Then Rice announced the sat subject tests were optional. At the Rice tour/event in September they made a point to talk about relaxing the requirements.
I would guess like all the top schools, they want high numbers of applicants to drive acceptance rates down. Some would have otherwise just not applied this year. Most likely they will go back to being recommended then probably required at some point.
I agree @ccsouth , although I think most of the top school nowadays are putting less and less emphasis on tests and just feeding numbers which is why most of the schools don’t have it required (but recommended). Although I do feel like if they were to have two close applicants but one had sent the sub tests and one didn’t, it would be one way to differentiate…
Rice is one of my absolute top choices along with UCB but after getting rejected from other schools that are suppose to be “less selective”, I feel like I have no chance for Rice :((( Sorry to bring negative thoughts here I hope all of us have good news by end of this week!
@whateverrrr I definitely relate. I was rejected/waitlisted at most of the schools that I thought of as my likely colleges. I kind of feel hopeless because I just have USC and Rice to hear back from, which are my top two schools and my biggest reach schools. At the same time, I think that I was waitlisted/rejected from my likely schools because I put less effort into those supplemental essays so they were pretty bad but I put almost all my time into my Rice and USC supplements.
Honestly, the only thing we can do now is hope for the best. Good luck to everyone !!!
Lol totally feel all of you. I’m personally not feeling the best after taking 4 Ls in a row. Nevertheless, I wish the best of luck to everyone come tomorrow!
My son was deferred by rice ED and is now waiting for results again.
He’s also waiting on Brown and Stanford. He’s a competitive student, but these are very selective.
Where else are you guys waiting for results?
@caprica6 upenn, yale, princeton, stanford
Deferred ED from Rice, accepted to University of Chicago, Rochester, awaiting Carleton, Tufts, and Vassar. Hoping Rice comes through!!!
Wow those are some great schools too. My son was accepted at Wisconsin Madison, but if he doesn’t get any reach schools, plans on going to Iowa State. He got a lot of scholarships there and would be in the honors program. He’s a great student, but he’s the kind of kid that will be successful where ever he goes. Certainly, I am following on of these threads thinking, this is a crazy, anxiety ridden, process. Geesh! Good luck to us all.
Yeah I kind of take the absolute silence since the application was submitted as not a good sign. Other less selective schools have been persistent with emails/mailings since application was submitted. Kinda feel like once the school was able to get the application submitted (lots of emails, mailings prior to application deadline) their part was done. Seems a bit shady. DD did not get requested major at UT Austin (Auto admit, Top 1% 4.0, NMF, 33 etc) and rejected from WashU. Expecting a couple more rejections honestly. She has a safety school she is happy with and has full tuition plus covered at that school. So we are thankful for that. Just reading the stats of those rejected from top schools is kinda deflating.
Well, the approach we took was knowing that when you are talking about Stanford and the like, everyone is well qualified and worthy, it’s like a lottery, and someone’s got to get in. Maybe it’ll be my son, maybe not. Good to have some good safeties on the list for sure. I know some kids have really been focusing on Ivy’s for a long time. My son hans’t really been like that. He just wants to go to a good school and learn. I defiantly understand the excitement about the Ivys though. He did visit Rice, and liked it a lot. He would be thrilled to go there.
@PBern123 my D applied ED with no subject tests and was admitted.
Rice is different from many other schools that deluge kids with marketing materials before and after they apply. Last year we heard nothing after my daughter submitted her application until decision day. The decision will come up on the portal on the date and time announced. Last year If the student was admitted, Rice sent them a large envelope in the mail that arrived a few days after the online notification. The envelope contained a fairly plain looking blue folder with the Rice crest on the front. The blue folder was stuffed with a letter from the admission office and other admission info. Even the admission materials were matter of fact. There was no envelope with a huge message on the outside or a GIF with confetti etc. Rice is Rice. Hang in there and I hope all of you have good news in a few days.
@Houston1021 I guess they’ve changed that mailing system since last year because no one has made any comment on their acceptances yet… seems like everyones getting their results at the same time
