Class of 2022 (sharing, discussing, application and audition season)

wow @actorparent1 congrats! That’s being organized. Can I ask, how quickly did you hear back after submitting the prescreen/applications? My S submitted several last week, so it will help calm him down if he has a timeframe. And if you don’t mind sharing which schools she has audition dates for.

@MTmomSF, Marymount Manhattan, University of the Arts, and Juilliard are confirmed - they were very quick. Hartt and UNCSA are done and audition dates requested, so we’re just waiting for email confirmation of the dates from the schools. Hartt said the email would come in Octiber, I think. Rutgers and SUNY Purchase are done but they’re supposed to email us instructions on how to schedule the audition (Purchase said they will email in October). A couple of schools need prescreens which we’re filming next weekend. So it’s all over the map: some confirm the audition date immediately, while others just confirm that they received the application and say they’ll email later about the audition date.

(And my original reply to DoinResearch seems to have disappeared - not sure if it’s a CC glitch or just my computer. But anyway, I had explained that my daughter’s school only does one musical per year, and they hold auditions the previous spring, then start rehearsals the first day of school. My daughter got cast, and I told her in order to do it, she would have to get ALL the college stuff done by the end of the summer, because once rehearsal started she wouldn’t have time. So it was a summer of huge pressure and stress! But it was worth it, because most of her applications are submitted and her monologues are audition-ready, so she can relax and enjoy show rehearsals without pressure.)

@actorparent1 I so tried to impress upon the kid the importance of starting early…we are chipping away so slowly due to school play demands. We’ll get there!

Thank you @actorparent1 This helps me to keep S from totally freaking out.

@DoinResearch Yea, my D and I both agreed it made sense NOT to do the Fall show at school. It helped that it was not a title she loved anyway, but since she was away for 7 weeks this summer, 5 at RADA, that we needed to clear the decks and get the apps done and monologues ready. I’m hoping maybe she can try for the Spring Musical, but honestly, they cast right before Christmas break and start rehearsing in January, and obviously Jan and Feb will be full of college auditions. The school musical goes up in March, so that stinks. Might have to find an April show outside of school that starts in February. Someone pointed out that will keep them distracted while we are just WAITING, WAITING.

@Jkellynh17 That is a totally different point that I had not considered, that once all the auditions are done, it might be just as well to be doing a show and stay distracted!

New Question: For the resume for Theater programs, is there a standard format, or are quite a wide range of formats allowed? The one we use for my D has been approved by her former NYC manager, so I guess I thought it was good enough. All thoughts welcomed…

Common App question. For the 10 Extra Curriculur Activities, would you list an individual theater production? Or lump a bunch of them together, for example, could say HS Drama - 3 years. HS Musical - 3 years. Regional Theater, 6/7/8 productions, etc etc? I know we will attach a resume too but just wondering how to do things for the Common App. I was leaning toward what I just described, as this would leave room for a few other activites, volunteer work, etc.

@FourStars, we did the “industry standard” resume, which has categories (Theater, Film, etc.), and then within each category, three columns - first is name of production, second is role, third is theater or director. Then a “Training” section listing acting, singing, or dance lessons, where they were taken, and the instructor.

For Common App, we just said “Theater” as the extracurricular activity.

@FourStars we lumped them together into her high school theatre shows, youth theatre shows, community theatre, and professional theatre. We also listed her dance as one category, vocal training as another category and choir participation as another. That way we also still had room for a couple of other extra curriculars and volunteer efforts.

Hello again. My D and I are hard at work finalizing her list for Theater/Acting programs. I am a little confused about UCLA. Does it only have a BA in Theater, no BFA? And I guess just to share information, their deadline is earlier than others, and no Common Application. Gettin down to business now!

@FourStars UCLA only has a BA and the application is due by 11/30 – which is about the same as a lot of programs, isn’t it?

@FourStars re: resume. I am seeing some schools wanting a little bit different resume than the industry standard. D is working on having 2 - one industry standard and one a little bit broader (which will have scholastic and work sections - considered a “full” resume and will be more than one page). Interestingly, U Michigan wants to see both!

@artskids. Thank you! Did Michigan post that or you had to call to find out? I find trolling through these websites is making me crazy. They are so different! Once in a while, I do just call, FYI. Sometimes you get someone really helpful. Not always. Thanks again!

@artskids Would you use the “full” version for the admissions interview, and the “theater” version for the audition?

On the U Mich site (mind you, I am looking at MT), the application requires a full resume. At the audition, you are required to provide an artistic resume. Why the difference? Why not…

I’m on D2, but D1 did MT and we had a coach. Until about a month ago, D2 only had a few schools (she wants to do screen acting), but then she decided she needed to add schools. I’m freaking out a little because I feel like we’re behind!!! And the coach was able to answer all of the questions. All I had to do was schedule auditions. This time is completely different. She hasn’t started filming prescreens yet! UGH. Ok, vent over. My question is: I can’t find 2017-18 audition dates for U Arts. The ones I saw are 2016-17. These college websites are terrible!

@MTmom2017 I’ve been waiting for UArts to update their website, too. Last year, they had an early November date! Hopefully, it will be updated soon. It’s a little further down my D’s to do list or we’d call! I assume UArts will remain a Unified school.

Thanks @artskids! My next job is to get a paper calendar and write in all the schools/dates and see what works. I NEVER thought I’d be doing this a second time… There are no wine glass emoji’s. hehe

Oh @MTmom2017 I hear 'ya. #3 for me. We NEED a wine emoji!
