Class of 2022 (the journey); sharing, venting, discussing

@beachymom She is going to SEMO! Getting excited but nervous. Sign up for classes etc. later this month! I will say she was on a waitlist but never heard yay or nay. So we decided to move forward. It’s a whole new set of worries for me! There are those that would say I worry way too much…

Hello! I’m a rising senior who is gearing up for an incredibly stressful year full of auditions. I’m a singer first, then dancer/actor. My school list right now is fairly small, with a pretty even mix of BA’s and BFA’s (as my parents want me to keep my options open and possibly be able to double major). Most college based summer intensives were too pricey for my family, so I am doing a week with Broadway Workshop this August in NYC (staying with family friends). I haven’t heard much about it on this board, but my school did a great class with them, so hopefully it will be a good experience.

I’ve mostly done high school/youth shows, with featured or supporting roles. My school is not a performing arts school but we have a very large and competitive drama department. I’m currently trying to figure out whether or not I should use an audition coach vs just a regular acting coach (I would love a true audition coach but they are $$$), so if anyone has any input that would be greatly appreciated. I’m very excited (and nervous) for the next year, and wish best of luck to all the other students pursuing drama in college!

@MThopeful99 this is a thread I started last year when I had the same question: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/theater-drama-majors/1882799-college-audition-coaching-p1.html

Hi all - first time posting but long time lurker. My d is a dancer/singer/actor looking for MT programs with heavy dance concentration. We have a pretty solid list but would love to hear any suggestions. She is our oldest so first time going through the whole college search experience adding in the PA part of it and we are all overwhelmed. She has been in several school plays/musicals and will attend Broadway Breakthru at CCPA this summer. Up until this year she has been completely immerged in dance training. After last fall’s musical (Little Shop) she just fell in love with MT and surprisingly she has a huge belting alto voice that knocked our socks off. I am nervous, excited and slightly anxious about the next year but she cannot wait. I am looking forward to

Welcome @emdcollege! From our experience with the recent audition process, some of the most dance intensive schools on her list seemed to include Roosevelt CCPA with their dance concentration, Boston Conservatory, University of Utah, Pace and Rider. Also, Oklahoma City U, though known for its music program has an amazing dance program as well. Best of luck to you as you begin this challenging process!

@emdcollege – There are several MT programs with dance concentrations. CCPA and Otterbein come to mind. Boston Conservatory is well known for its dance. And I feel CCM also typically has strong dancers. Robin Lewis at Rider is also very strong in dance.
Our D went to OCU and they do have a very extensive dance program with 10 levels each in tap, jazz and ballet and many other specialty classes. Unlike some programs whose class cohorts take dance all together no matter their levels, MTs at OCU level just like dance majors and are placed in the classes at which they level regardless of major. So if you are a strong dancer you will be placed at a level that matches your skills. You will not necessarily be in dance class with other MTs.
In addition to the MT degree at OCU, I would highly encourage you to investigate the dance performance major at OCUs Ann Lacy School of Dance. We have many dance school graduates on Broadway, with the Rockettes, on national tours and working regionally. Recently they have been in shows like Hamilton and Anastasia. They do get some voice and acting as part of their degree program. I think it is a wonderful program and certainly worth consideration for strong dancers.

The two programs audition separately so that is something to plan on if interested in both.

Agree with @vvnstar . Great suggestions

? I have been reading the Class of 2021 pages and they mention a fb group called The company I would like to have my daughter follow them but we cannot find them. Any suggestions on how to get them to pop up when we search?

The kids change the name of the fb group every year. Don’t know the name this year. Does anyone else?

I believe it’s called the red room. As opposed to the green room I guess! LOL

I hope it’s not called The Red Room! There are a few pages with that name and they are all about nudity and bondage ala 50 Shades!

LOL @marg928 I checked on The Company page and that’s what they told someone and he said he joined! All I could think of was Behind the Green Door when I read the name. And the kids were loving that it was called that. Go figure.

That being said you are right…I just did a search! Yeek! I will check again on The Company page. Hopefully they changed it or it was a joke…

Unfortunately it’s not a joke. It is indeed called The Red Room. I don’t know why but I can find out…

Would it be helpful to start threads that layout some general requirements for schools that people can copy/paste and then add to a list thread, such as:
Schools that typically require a pre-screen video
Schools that typically require a dance audition
Schools that require an essay for the overall university
Schools that require on-campus auditions.
Schools that typically require essays for the theatre/music school/program?
I know that this can change, but there are some historical precedents that could be helpful for groundwork and research. Open to suggestions on what would be most useful.

@theatremom10 Probably thought it was funny and a play on Green Room too.

@loribelle all that information is on the school theater dept websites. There are just so many schools out there I’m not sure it would be practical to have threads for all that info. I made a spreadsheet with all that information on it and it was invaluable. In fact, my original spreadsheet grew to four different sheets in the document by the end of the process. The main sheet had all the schools that looked like they might be a fit (which was 45 at first!) and across the top I had several headings including Name, Location, BA/BFA, credits in major, study abroad, tuition, etc. I had a separate sheet for audition info ie. dates they were being held, what monologues they required, prescreen, etc. I can email it to you just PM me.

Nice article about an LMU alum who is working on Hamilton

I just received the dates for next year’s various plays/musicals/music festivals and of course the Winter Play is the same week as Chicago Unifieds and All State Auditions are the same as NYC Unifieds. My daughter has been waiting for years to be able to do all things her senior year. She was a highly competitive dancer and that took up 20+ hours a week and every weekend from Sept to July. She has decided to not dance next year in order to focus on strengthening her voice and acting. And now she will still have to choose what not to do. I can guarantee that she will not want to do unifieds at all. If that is the case that her list of audition schools needs to be revamped and she is going to have to look at schools closer to home. This is going to be a very long year.

@emdcollege - what about LA? I’m not sure where you live but many of the schools also go to LA (and I believe Las Vegas - although I cannot find anything about those auditions). Feb 10 & 11 for LA.
