@katgirlchicago - I don’t think any of us are taking issue with the idea that talent/hard work (with an emphasis on the latter) are the key components for success. It was more the helicopter parent commentary at the end that sent us off…
@katgirlchicago I don’t think the “attack” was on thinking twice about sending your child to a less expensive school (some might have lots of money to go to Julliard or NYU), that is always good advice. Rather, in my opinion, it felt like a judgment that if a child wants to go to an expensive school it is because of a “helicopter parent.” The response by @actorparent1 spoke more to the point, that this forum is to provide information and support, not judgment. We are all trying to navigate this complicated process to better support our kids. How each chooses to go about the support they provide is their personal choice, and it is not up to us to cast judgment. That was not achieved in the second half of the original post by WorkingActor. For me, CC has been invaluable.
@katgirlchicago There are many paths to take and it is wrong to judge other’s choices. It was not because of helicopter parenting that my D chose to attend NYU as @actorparent implies. My D was a strong academic student with talent. For her, it DID matter what school she attended, because she wanted to be challenged in academic subjects as well as performance. So for her, her college list began with schools that were academic matches that offered the best MT options. Many performers, might not have the same goals, but it was my D’s path. And it did work out for her. She still occasionally sings and she takes voice and dance lessons, but has NOT earned a living as a performer to date. She decided to pursue the business side of entertainment (working in casting and talent management) and is now back at NYU earning her MBA. She still feels that she might pursue MT at a later point in life, and certainly has the connections to help her in that direction, but it is not what she wants now. For her, better academics and the prestige of her undergraduate degree helped her earn a full-tuition scholarship at two schools when she applied for her MBA.
@uskoolfish, I wasn’t the one who posted about helicopter parents. It was WorkingActor who made that post.
I agree that there are many paths but my statement is that I didn’t take workingactors Post as a negative or attacking. I I would hope no one thought the statement was an attack. God forbid our children get into this business and get rejected. I’ve had to learn that some folks are just a bit more direct than other… I am hoping for the best for Everyone
I agree with you 1000%… I don’t believe that workingactor was implying that a child has a helicopter parent because we want our kids in the best school that meets their needs. I think he/she was just saying Hey! your kid doesn’t have to go to an expensive school in his/her opinion. I think we all have a little bit of Helicopter Parent in us (that’s why we are on this forum to begin with …smile… ) … I just think there was another option… He/she was just bluntly putting it out there… Hoping your kid gets into whatever school you guys are hoping for
best
@katchicago - “these posts make me laugh! Let your kid do the work. You all are not helping them with all this neurotic planning and posting” - as a parent (with thousands of posts!) sure sounds like an attack to me. @WorkingActor May have had the best of intentions - though it seems a little hit and run since they haven’t been back - but the ending negated any pearls of wisdom for me
@toowonderful agreed!!! Sounds like a person who has never had children to me. I will never feel bad for supporting my child as much as humanly possible throughout this process!
Has anyone heard back from Ithaca yet?
I read that they don’t start reviewing until mid-October, so they probably just started this week.
Does anyone recall which hotels NYU has been at in previous years at LA Unifieds? Pace is a good ways away from the LA Unified schools and I was wondering if NYU is the same.
@Twoboysandadog - Last year NYU was in 2 different hotels depending on which day you auditioned. Both were a ways away from unifieds. One was the Millennium Biltmore but I’m not sure the other one.
Pace was at LA Unifieds at the Weston last year. Are they not there this year?
@sopranomtmom My son’s FTVC audition with Pace is downtown at the Sheraton Grand. Maybe they do MT auditions somewhere else?
@Twoboysandadog That must be it. My daughter’s audition was for MT and it was at the Weston.
@Twoboysandadog and the others…Does the Pace and NYU websites not say where the auditions are?
@Notmath1 The websites say LA, but not exactly where. NYU says in an email that the exact location is TBD and Pace gave us the location after passing the prescreen.
But I should point out that my son is straight acting so maybe his locations are different.
@Twoboysandadog You may be very familiar with LA and its traffic patterns, but in case not, or for others who may be following… If you are asking because you are trying to schedule other auditions the same day as NYU in LA, I would assume for now that NYU will be downtown again, and I would leave a bare minimum of 1.5 hours between the NYU audition and any other. It can routinely take at least 45 minutes to get between the LAX area and downtown - just driving time alone, not factoring in getting in and out of buildings, waiting for an uber or getting your car from parking, getting lost, audition running late, etc. Personally, I would leave a 2 hour cushion.
@elsacc Exactly! That’s why I wanted to know if NYU was downtown or by LAX.
