Class of 2022 (the journey); sharing, venting, discussing

@type1mom and @anotherBwaymom, my daughter auditioned in NYC and received a “nice to meet you but no” letter from Ithaca and a “still under consideration” email from Otterbein. Has anyone else heard news from different schools?

@MTMOM17 Yes - “deferred” from Penn State. She just had her CCM audition on Saturday. They said she would know by this Friday if she was yes/no/on hold. Have you had her check her portal to make sure all her application materials are in? They assistant dean emphasized a number of times they cannot provide a response unless all of the application materials have been submitted. The files go to admissions each Tuesday, with the goal of sending responses by Friday. Your D will get an email indicating a decision has been made and she would be directed to the portal.

We are “still in consideration” at Guthrie from NY Unifieds. I kind of hate this purgatory. I know a talented youngster who got a “no” and a nice cc commenter that was accepted for the callback weekend.

I think a straight up “no” in our case would have been easier. My daughter felt terrible about her audition but thinks the world of the program. Kind of wish they were more cut and dry. They will see lots of talent in Chicago and if they were on the fence it sort of feels like a looooonger drawn out probable no.

@dramamama2022 I assume the Ithaca letter was by regular mail and not through the portal or e-mail, correct?

Thank you @artskids. I’m having my D double check that all of her application materials have been submitted, but as far as I know they have been. She auditioned Sunday, January 21st.

@MTmom2017 my daughter auditioned then as well, Was your daughter in the morning group? We haven’t heard anything from any school. She and I have both checked her portal to make sure she didn’t miss anything and there is nothing different. I hope we are looking at the correct page.

@laylamom I would not view it that way at all. Sure, you would like a straight up callback. But the fact your D is still under consideration means that the school liked her. And if she does get called back, perhaps she can give what she considers her best work. While there will be talented kids in Chicago, the school knows that and still is considering her. And there were plenty of talented kids in NYC as well. and if we play the “probable no” game, then is a no still probable in a callback situation?

Never tell me the odds!

@DramaMan, Ithaca’s letter came via snail mail.

Thanks @DramaMan. Kind and wise words. This process tends to bring out the frantic child in me (of course not to my D). I wish for your level headed maturity!
I wish I did not know the odds haha!

@laylamom Believe me, I am as frantic (bordering on hysterical) as you about my child. But it is much easier to see a clearer picture when we are not so personally invested. And I know how highly regarded and desired Guthrie’s program is. So to still be in consideration should provide validation of your child’s talent and portends that she will find a spot somewhere good.

Daughter got a “no longer being considered” from Otterbein almost the day after she got back from Unifieds. We have heard nothing else and maybe a tad concerned that her Montclair portal still reads that she still needs to audition, even though she already did and has also been academically accepted.

@collegemom2000 do you remember what the Otterbein audition was like at unifieds? Was It just the Shakespeare monologue or a contemporary one as well? They were my D’s only school that needed a Shakespeare monologue… definitely not something she has much experience with TBH so she’s a little apprehensive about that particular audition for Chicago unifieds. She thought her prescreen Shakespeare was a little rough… but then she passed. So, I guess it wasn’t horrible-LOL- and hey- at least she tried something new!! I am curious if their MT program is more classic than contemporary or more acting based than others? Or what the rationale is behind the shakespeare requirement for MT applicants. I’m just wondering if helps to see a fuller picture of their understanding of characters/ language? Anyone know why some MT programs include that- and is It indicative of their program in any way?

@collegemom2000 The Montclair portal says the same thing for my Daughter as well. When she auditioned at Unifed they said they had everything they needed, but the portal has the audition unchecked. And, yes, also accepted already to the school.

Yes, @emdcollege, we were with the Sunday morning group.

I feel like “check your portal” could be labeled “Mom reminder 3” and put on a loop. After missing out Elon because D had not uploaded a document that SHE HAD COMPLETED MONTHS AGO (UGGGHHH), I had her go into each portal to confirm if anything else was missing.

@FLtheaterDad Same here for Montclair. Will they update us via email if we get accepted?

Montclair admissions likely has not yet updated the portal, but any acceptance to the BFA Musical Theatre program will come via email. At least, that is my understanding.

Has anyone heard back from Belmont January 13 auditions?

Just as a side here @DramaMan please don’t fall into the “this school’s acceptance is a validation of your child’s talent” trap…you do not need an acceptance or hold or deferment or waitlist from a school to validate your child’s talent  Because in reality there is no true validation of such talent. Its all subjective. Everyone should keep this in mind during your child’s acceptance/rejection process. Don’t let him/her lose their confidence the next few months! And most importantly…don’t start doubting your child’s talents and gifts. They are there or you wouldn’t be on this forum and subjecting yourself to all this MT admissions torture. it will be very difficult to maintain a positive attitude if /when you start getting the no’s. And aren’t all the kids getting no’s? Tbh if you got a yes or waitlist or whatever from a school it may have had nothing to do with your child’s insane talent lol it may have been “Wow she’s a good singer /dancer , maybe not AS good as (other girl in consideration) BUT we sure need someone with that look, height, weight, skin color, …” and of course who cares as long as you get some yes from somewhere you applied!

@savedrama4momma they want the Shakespeare monologue only for the live audition. They are definitely more of a classical program; my daughter knows someone who goes to school there for MT and that is what she was told. My girl is not a classical actress at all so she was not surprised they didn’t move her forward. I have a suspicion they passed everyone on the pre-screens…I haven’t heard of anyone yet who didn’t pass.
