Class of 2022 (the journey); sharing, venting, discussing

@monkey13 It was certainly my impression that such casting was rare but the woman leading the tour didn’t want to draw bright lines.

Yesss I love that everyone is talking about auditioning at less competitive schools! It’s so true that a higher acceptance rate than CCM or NYU doesn’t mean that students at these schools can’t be talented.

I am currently a freshman in UTampa’s BFA MT program. If anyone has any questions about my experience at a lesser known MT school, please pm me! Or even questions about auditions in general at lesser known, less competitive schools like LIU Post, Samford, Tampa, U Memphis… so if you have any questions about those specifically I’d be happy to answer too!

@BassTheatreMom our MTCA coach definitely gave us the a-ok for BA programs without a BFA. He did not recommend the alternative. My D did end up deciding to go with a BA program for various reasons (she had 5 BFA acceptances). She just started at Loyola Marymount today!

Thank you everyone for sharing your story! My D is mostly applying for straight acting, so please can someone tell me how to find the OTHER board? I seem to always find the MT one! Good luck to everyone!

@FourStars here is the link to the theatre boards:

@FourStars Go under ‘forum home’ and then ‘college majors’. past the MT link there is a “Theater/Drama” major link.

@vvnstar - great minds. Didn’t mean to duplicate. :slight_smile:

You might want to consider University of Utah’s MTP program. My daughter is now a freshman and was primarily a dancer. She is really enjoying it so far and is challenged in dance. Feel free to ask me questions.

touching on the topic of schools that draw from a more regional pool of applicants for auditions and may not be on your radar…DeSales Univ in PA, Northern Kentucky, Western Carolina, Kent State, seton hill in PA, Oakland Univ

Univ of Mary Washington in VA (non audition with MT track)

Hi all, I am new to the forum and looking for some feedback on my daughter’s college list. She has been performing for about 8 years and is a singer/actor/dancer in that order. Just curious on thoughts on her list. Any feedback is appreciated!!!

Welcome @anotherBwaymom. You will want to add at least one safety BA (safety defined as non-audition, affordable, well within D’s academic stats and a school in which D would be willing to attend). Also, your list may be considered a top-heavy; consider adding some lesser well-known schools that may have rolling admissions or higher than a 5-8% acceptance rate into the BFA programs.

Thanks so much!! @artskids One safety we are considering is Christopher Newport. Do you have other ideas? She is looking for a campus environment but also loves big cities.

@anotherBwaymom I teach at JMU, and am happy to answer questions and put your daughter in touch with a current student.

In addition to CNU you may also want to look at University of Mary Washington as a non-audition program. I believe that they are still non-audition, and have a MT track.

Depending on your daughter’s grades Muhlenburg could also be a strong non-audition BA to look at.

Thanks so much!! @KatMT She loves JMU and knows a couple kids there. I will definitely look into the others too! It’s so nice to have this forum available!

Checking in because this process is not for the feint of heart! My S is wading through 14 applications and I am knee deep in spreadsheets listing the audition requirements for prescreen/auditions and trying to map out audition dates if he passes the prescreens! What I wouldn’t give for Common Audition Requirements! Even now, I’m sitting here thinking that I need to go back to every website one more time because what if I typed that it was a 1.5 minute monologue for a school and they really only wanted a one minute monologue?

Not to mention all of the artistic work that needs to be done in preparation. DS is getting conflicting advice from a few too many cooks and he is getting stressed out. I want to think that after applications are in and prescreens done, if he gets some positive feedback from that, he will be able to tackle the auditions from a good spot. Deep breaths…

I hope that everyone is staying calm - I’ve read enough of the prior year posts to know that we will get through this- and hopefully next year be checking in on the next class of MT hopefuls while our kids are ensconced in their perfect (for them) programs!

It’s great that you’re organized, @lots2learn - that helps a ton. Go back and check those lengths (better yet, have your S do it) or you will drive yourself nuts second-guessing.

Prescreens will give your S some great feedback. As long as he has applied/is soon applying to some schools he likes that don’t require a prescreen, he will be able to course-correct in the event the prescreen feedback is “no” in time to knock the rest of the schools’ socks off in auditions. That’s what happened with my D. Just got off the phone with her after her first week of school, and she is soooo happy with her program, the faculty, the other students, just everything. There is a light at the end of this tunnel!

Regarding cuts: we found there aren’t as many variations as it seems (e.g., sometimes the 1.5 minute cut works for the 32 bar, or the 16 works for the up to a minute, etc.).

@anotherBwaymom I too think your daughter’s list is really top heavy, but that being said, I second the Mary Washington, CNU, and Muhlenberg options and would add nearby American (I think they only have one audition weekend so it would have to be good with your schedule) and maybe look at Temple and CAP21/Malloy if she loves cities. All those schools are within the same general geographic area. So also, maybe consider schools outside of the mid-atlantic/southeast too?

@MomofMTBoy Thanks so much for your feedback!! We will continue to tweak her list. I never dreamed she would be applying to so many schools for college!!

@lots2learn - My S and I are in the same spot. He’s 9 applications in and 3 to go. I did a spreadsheet this summer on the requirements for the schools - pre-screen or not, cuts, etc., but I am planning to have him revisit all of those once he has the applications done. I just keep the mantra of - one day at a time - one thing at a time - in my head. It’s too much to think about the whole picture. S has his first on-campus audition scheduled for the 3rd week in November. I know it’s too much to hope for, but I am SOOOO hoping for an accept out of that as it’s a rolling admission program. It would be a huge pressure release, and would allow for a reduced audition list. I mean, a Mom can dream, right? :))
