@HankCT On the page that lays out the merit scholarship program, there are two tabs - one for in-state and one for out-of-state. The stats you quote line up with the Trustee Scholarship that is 4-6k for in-state and 15-17K for out-of-state students. For out-of-state students, the Presidential Scholarship is 12-14, Provost 6-8 and Delaware Scholar 2-3. Even though the in-state scholarships are lower, the price is about 21k cheaper for in-state. In addition, UDel offers a Distinguished Scholar Award Program that offers up to full tuition scholarships for the top students.
My D with a 1430 SAT received a 17K Trustee Scholarship and a 3K grant, which put it in the middle of the pack between TCNJ (In-State), Rutgers, UNH, UVM and Binghamton. We eliminated Pitt which offered no merit scholarship.
@Sparcky 1560 with an A average, wow, thatâs Harvard/Yale stuff, very nice! Still surprised it was only 10K for that. I think I was looking at the in-state numbers thinking they were for out of state. Explains a lot.
@jdcollegedad Agreed - I guess I was looking at in state numbers, which makes a lot more sense. In the end, they seem to really like the 1375 SAT score number as a tier, it jumps to 8K. My DD missed that by 75 points. In hindsight, had we known an extra 100 points on the SAT would have made such a financial difference, she would have actually prepped for it. Learning lessons for DD 2 and 3 here.
DD1 was accepted to Binghamton as well, as an example. The OOS net price there with 5K in merit is about 37K per year. Delaware with 3K merit is a net of ~47K. Big difference for us. All of her other schools, similar level, all came in with an OOS net price between 36-41. Delaware is 47.
@HankCT Thanks. But at their very competitive STEM HS, thatâs par for the course. (This year there are 2 or 3 1600âs.) He didnât even apply Ivy due to the competition at school and weâre in the donut hole of too much but also not enough money for that.
As for UD, he applied late in the cycle so Iâve always wondered if there might have been more if he had applied sooner. Also, when he started was before âdifferential tuitionâ so it was less expensive.
@Sparcky Wow, just had to google âdifferential tuitionâ, and when I read the description I was shocked. At first I thought of this as a bit of a rip off, but after thinking a bit about it, sort of makes sense, as I would expect demand for STEM to be higher, teachers to require more compensation, and equipment for the courses to be far more expensive (think computer lab versus kids taking philosophy). Having said that, I hope they did not bait and switch anyone, meaning when your child started school, it was clear up front that in x years they would begin doing that.
@HankCT When my son enrolled we had no idea they would implement the differential tuition (DT). It was announced in the middle of his sophomore year, effective this current year. It is phased in, ramping up to $4k per year for engineering. It also affects business and nursing, but not as much money. Already enrolled students get a 50% credit the first year. It didnât hit us too hard since itâs not the full $4k until after he graduates and we get the credit, but for those who enrolled last spring, they got an unexpected total cost increase of over $10k. Totally a bait and switch for the 2018 freshman. Need based aid was adjusted but the presidentâs statement basically said âother schools do it already and we think parents will pay for itâ. If you look at their COA, there is an asterisk with a note that some programs cost more. How many people do you think notice this? I know about it and I had to look closely to find it!
@AMariaDas My son same - accepted aroun 1/11 no word yet on merit yet even though he qualifies. They also said they needed more time to determine Honors program for him. 1410, 3.6 unweighted, lots of ecâs. Accepted Engineering Undeclared.
Son was just accepted. Applied Jan 15th - OOS - 35 ACT and 3.87 Weighted GPA. Accepted Civil and Environmental Engineering. Anyone know how to find out about Merit aid?
@MomMartha LOL looks like your son waited until the last minute to apply! My son got him beat though - he actually sent in his application late (Jan 17), and still got in - same department (CE) OOS (CA), SAT 1330 , 3.6uw/3.7w GPA. Also got into Clemson (different major though - Construction Science in College of Architecture). Still waiting for Virginia Tech decision - his #1 choice.
@genesmasher - Yes, since Del had a late date, he applied to all of the others earlier. He also got into Clemson (waiting for our letter and possible Merit aid) and waiting for VA Tech as his #1. He did not apply engineering at VA Tech since it is too competitive from our area of NOVA.
@MomMartha - Thatâs great. Clemson seems very stingy with merit assistance for OOS, we are not really counting on anything really. I wish my son applied to Building Construction major at VA Tech from the start. He went for CE, but as you say, CoE at VT is very competitive, and they donât give a second major option anymore, which really sucks. At this point all we can do is wait and hope. Itâs cool to know that others apply to the same schools - validates our choices
Hi! Iâm still currently waiting for my decision after being deferred. Does anyone know about home much longer i will have to wait? I was originally deferred for nursing, but I changed my major to biology after, so Iâm hoping that helps. My SAT is a 1240 and my GPA is a 98.5. Can someone please tell me my chances and tell me the latest they think I will hear back from admissions? Thank you!
I applied 10 minutes before the deadline on January 15th and I know it takes 8-12 weeks to reach back but I was also told they get back to in-state applicants faster? Also could applying late make a difference?
@MomMartha My Daughter was accepted into UDel and also got into Clemson. We are waiting for that letter any minute now. UDel is her first choice unless Clemson offers merit / scholarships that are comparable to UDelâs. Either way, she cannot go wrong with any of these choices. Best of luck to all
@collegegal20 my daughter just changed her major too (a little over a week ago) and admissions counselor said it would take same amount of time as stated in the letter she received in mid December. No later than early April. Hope that helps. Maybe you can email the admissions counselor for your area and see what they say. She switched from business undeclared to university studies (undeclared).
I got an email 10 minutes ago saying âWelcome to the Blue Hen Community!â and a list of dates on accepted students day. I have a question tho, how can I see what major I was accepted into? I went onto my portal but it doesnât say anything.
