Class Of 2023 Statistics and Makeup

Fresh off the press. https://admissions.yale.edu/sites/default/files/2023classprofileweb.pdf
Notable figures:

Students identifying as White now in the minority 49.3% vs Class of 2022 at 52.8% https://admissions.yale.edu/sites/default/files/class_profile_2022_fall.pdf

Biggest jump in Asian makeup 25.9% vs 21.7% (Harvard litigation impact?)
International dropped from 10.8% to 9.5%

46% speak a language other than English at home or as a first language vs 39%.

Higher percentage of students in the 760 - 800 SAT range (esp Math); lower percentage in middle range (700-750).

Interestingly, in March, the YDN reported the following: https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2019/03/28/yale-admits-5-91-percent-of-applicants/

The number of apps reported from the two sources is virtually identical (36,844 vs. 36,843). The flyer states, though, that there was a 6.2% admit rate vs. the 5.91% in the article. Accordingly, it looks like around 110 kids must have been admitted off the waitlist of 984. If so, total admits were 2,178 (per the article) + 110 = 2,288.

The flyer states that there are 1,554 enrolled first-years and 51 postponing matriculation. Last year’s profile said that 60 students postponed matriculation. So, assuming everyone who took a gap year last year showed up this year, 1,554 - 60 + 51 = 1,545 students admitted this year who accepted their offers. Accordingly, yield was 1,545 / 2,288, or about 68%.

“46% speak a language other than English at home or as a first language”
That is that stat that surprises me the most, although there is probably a fair amount of wiggle room when you say “speak a language other than English at home.”

Comparing the two class profiles side by side, I love that they included an interior shot of the Beinecke library in 2023 profile.

What a sublime space, highly recommended to anyone visiting New Haven.

The YDN has now produced a story on yield for the Class of 2023 which I suspect may slightly overstate it (they don’t reduce the 1,554 enrolled students number to account for those who were admitted in prior years and deferred their enrollment). If the YDN is correct, then the wording on the profile has to be wrong or at least imprecise, I think.
