Reflection:

My stats won’t help too much, because of the background difference. I went to a top ranking international school in Korea, so it was competitive, but well known. I believe my not so-good GPA was covered by this factor (of course, with a high upward trend).

Strengths: Essays were stunning and counselor rec was awesome
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Upward trend GPA and my passion for education
Weaknesses: GPA, test scores
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: 1) counselor rec 2) essays 3) school profile
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: N/A
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application:
ESSAYS!

Pick one:
Decision: Accepted!!

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 1520 (770,750)
Weighted GPA: 3.935, I had like a 3.5 unweighted
AP (place score in parenthesis): World (4), APUSH (5), APES (4), Micro (4), Macro (4), Lang (5)
Senior Year Course Load: AP lit, AP Spanish, AP Stats, Physics I, AP Comparative Government, Orchestra
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None really lol

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): HS Swim team captain, swim coach, cello player (8 years).
Job/Work Experience: coaching swimming
Volunteer/Community service:
Summer Activities: swimming, coaching, relaxing (no need to have 14 internships to get into a great school)
Essays: I was told they were outstanding by a former elite (top 10 ranked) university admissions officer and other college advisors. I was sincere and just wrote what I felt. My common app essay was pretty much written in 20 minutes.
Teacher Recommendation: Pretty sure these were extraordinary, written by two very smart and accomplished teachers.
Counselor Rec: very good.
Additional Rec: none
Interview: went great, highly recommend doing the interview.
Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: History
State (if domestic applicant): Virginia
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public, large.
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: highest
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): first generation from either side of family to be born in USA. Fully bilingual and proficient in third language. Unique combination of swimming, music, and stated desire to be in the ROTC.

Reflection

Strengths:
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: to convey how good of a match WM is for me, without sounding cheesy or exaggerating.
Weaknesses: two C+ on my transcript.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application:
Many things were unique, but my writing probably stood out the most. Then again, I’ll never know exactly what got me in.
College confidential was a great resource for me, and I hope my post can help a prospective WM student in the future. Best of luck, and GO TRIBE!!!

I thought about posting my stats here, but then I realized that College Confidential gives so many of us a lot more stress than comfort.

William and Mary is NOT the overly-competitive, numbers-obsessed school where everyone cares about sports and making the most amount of money. Its student culture is gloriously unique: pretty nerdy, artsy, diverse, with some edge. TWAMPs (Typical William and Mary People) are some of the kindest and most-accepting people you will ever meet.

DON’T STRESS about your decision or your application. As hard as it sounds, some colleges seem like the right fit but might not have put you in the best scenario to succeed. This world is not fair by any means, and mistake are made, but any college that accepts you will be happy to have you. It is good to be challenged, but you are more likely to succeed if you are above average at a decent school than if you were struggling to pass at your highest reach school.

That being said, BE YOU: your WEIRD, ARTSY, CREATIVE, NERDY, sometimes athletic, AND EMOTIONAL SELF in your application. Having been to a forums with admissions officers, they pay a lot more attention to the essays and course-load than they do GPA’s and test scores.

Best of luck, and I hope you can join us as part of the Tribe

Thanks, @funsizedsavage!

Accepted students, when did you get your official acceptance letter in the mail? My daughter’s came yesterday (12/20) which seems late. I wonder if something is wrong with our mail!

Do you think we have two weeks from the email to pay our deposit or two weeks from the snail mail letter?

I loved the message, “One Tribe, and now it’s yours”!

Have any of you been told the dates of the Admitted Students Days in the spring? Our S applied RD but I’m trying to make a list of the possible revisits he may need to make in April.

@homerdog, we haven’t received notification of accepted student days. If we do, I’ll let you know!

@homerdog Actually the date is included in a page specifically for admitted students that’s linked in the acceptance letter. It will be Saturday, April 13. You can find it at https://www.wm.edu/admission/undergraduateadmission/discover/timeline/index.php

@whosboss. Thanks! Interesting that it’s on a Sat. Glad S19 has already sat in on classes there.

S19 just got the postcard so we will plan on going to W&M on April 13th!

Congrats to everyone who was accepted. S attends a different school but was accepted 2 yrs ago and we visited a few times. Was in his final two. Such a great place! you will thrive there.

All the best.

@homerdog Your son applied RD and got the postcard? That must be a good sign?

@Propinquity4444 the postcards only go to RD candidates. It’s kike an early write. And yes it’s awesome!

@WhosBoss, thank you so much for posting the day for admitted students! I can’t believe we’ve been searching the W&M website and waiting for that information to come out for weeks, and it was there the whole time. I went to the site in the letter, but I never clicked on “Your Timeline”.

D19 was accepted ED1, and she really wants to go down for the weekend to meet people from the ED GroupMe, and just get more comfortable there.

Anyone have an idea of what they would like to major in? S19 is thinking maybe Physics.
