Did you get into UP?

UP or another campus?

Yeah, I was very confused on why I didn’t get into UP. From reading what everyone is saying, it seems like maybe all of the Smeal kids who got in last night didn’t get into UP for the fall. Very interesting. I’m just gonna assume it has nothing to do with my application, as I was a little worried something was off with it since I didn’t get into UP. Oh well, it is what it is - I was not really planning on going to Penn State anyway

I don’t know if I’m gonna worry abt it too much, but thanks for the input. Penn State was my last option (safety) so I was just more concerned on why they thought I wasn’t maybe good enough for UP, but I think they’re doing things weird this year with UP and Smeal kids. I also think they might want to see if I’m interested or not, but I don’t know

I think there are so many intangibles in this process you as an applicant have no control over there is no way to really know. Sometimes it comes down to you are not the target they are looking for that year according to things I’ve read. Or where your parents went to school, or yield protection.

I have been told for business they do look closely at math grades and scores. So it could be that if that’s an area which isn’t as strong as others? Who knows. Just throwing things into the wind. But that’s probably just as futile.

Truth is you’ll be accepted to many other schools and succeed wherever you end up. So love the schools that love you back.

Funny you mention that, but I’ve taken honors math my first three years of high school and then BC Calculus this year. (A- freshman year the rest A’s). I also got an A in AP Stats last year. Math is by far my strongest subject, so can’t be that. I have no idea why I didn’t get into UP, bottom line. I am confident I was one of the strongest applicants, so I’m guessing they’re just doing things weird this year with UP and Smeal. Thank you for your words of encouragement, it’s been a stressful time and seeing that I didn’t get into UP kinda made me uneasy, but I have faith everything will work out in the end

My son was admitted into University Park Smeal Marketing with summer start. We are out of state. He marked optional summer start on the common app. If you do this, do you automatically have to start in the summer? If he had not marked summer start, could he have started in the fall. He doesn’t want to give up his summer. Are there any options

My concerns are

  1. you want to make sure there’s no issue (ie., missing piece, grading scale or school profile not provided, etc) before RD deadlines. Meaning basically Friday or Monday are your last chances to reach out to your GC. Better safe than sorry.
  2. Penn State was your safety. Students should all have 2 affordable safeties they’re interested in and right now it sounds like your one safety didn’t come through. Meaning that if all goes wrong… you’re either on a gap year or going rnto community college. The point of having 2 safeties is having a choice in the Spring. It doesn’t have to be Penn State, you may have applied to a couple other safeties, but if you haven’t, look at other choices (Miami Ohio? UVermont? Temple? WVU? GMU? SUNYs?..) and apply quickly.
