Class of 2025 thread

The Honors Interviews were today. I don’t believe all kids admitted into Honors were invited. These were selected students - I don’t want to say top because that’s unfair to everyone else - but I guess those they deem the top. There are many Honors Students not selected.

All i know is merit money seems less this year than I read in the past. Much less than U of SC.

D accepted. Decent amount of Merit aid. Interesting choices coming up. Particularly as we have a tiny second home virtually on campus.

Just participated in the virtual Town Hall for accepted students and families. We found it very informative, so if you have an opportunity to do so, we’d recommend it. During the call, they mentioned that CofC received the highest number of applications in their history - about 20,000 - which they said was 30% more than last year and 60% more than the year prior. Wow! Congrats to all accepted students and best of luck to those awaiting decisions. We’re headed to Charleston today for an official tour. Can’t wait to get out of the snow and cold!

They do a great job on their tours. Have a good time and enjoy Charleston.

My daughter received acceptance last week with merit and then this weekend she got a second email that increased her merit, has this happened to anyone else? Just wonderful why it increased when she hasn’t taken any action yet or tried for additional scholarships.

Congrats. We got one merit offer - $12K - which is the max per their website (shows 8-12K OOS) but last year you had people earning $19.5K. I did notice if your EFC is under $30K they give you another $6K. Unfortunately, ours is triple that. It isn’t in real life but according to the FAFSA it is.

I was going to try to call today - D got $8k in merit, then the award showed an extra $6k. Our EFC is under $30k, so I guess that’s it! I was googling trying to find it. So that is something we don’t have to repay? And if our EFC ever goes over $30k, I assume we lose it.

Is it the 5,500 federal loan? (or something other than that…if it’s that and you don’t want it, you can decline it in the system)

No, it’s in addition to the Federal Loans. It’s called an Access to Excellence award. I did now find it on the website. My only worry is if something happens and the EFC goes up.

So i noticed as merit was down vs. what other people said. we got 12K which is the max.

Then i saw the Access to Excellence. It’s $6K and based on a FAFSA EFC of under $30K. So it’s a need based grant.

Charleston Fellows (fka Aikens Fellows) notification came last night for my daughter. Was accepted into Charleston Fellows as well as the International Scholar program. Came with some additional merit.

D was accepted with $$ but is currently on the waitlist for the Honors College. The letter says they start reviewing the HC waitlist in “early April.” Does anyone know when waitlisted students can expect to be notified if they are accepted into the Honors College?

We are in the exact same boat. We are going to visit in a couple weeks, and I’m hoping if she gets off, it’s before our visit. Keep us posted if you hear back!

Will do! We also plan to visit and hope to hear back first.

My daughter just got in! Email received about 6pm EST

Wow! Congratulations to your daughter. Thanks for letting me know. I’ll tell D to keep an eye out just in case she has an email coming too.

My DD will be applying with about a 3.7/3.8 average and I’m concerned if they are being stingy with merit. My son had a way lower average and was offered 10,000 last year, so I don’t understand. Did she go in declared?

Did they send the merit offer with the acceptance letter?

Did they tell you about merit with the acceptance letter? My daughter wants to ED, but is afraid to if we don’t get merit.

So you are talking about next year obviously. Not sure of your daughter’s stats - but Charleston is not a difficult school to get into - so I would definitely not ED.

I don’t know your finances. I personally did not let either kid ED - which is good for the school but not the kid. Only reason to ED is if money is no option - that’s it. Even those that think they are dirt poor find out they made a huge mistake going ED.

If you do ED it should be to a high ranked, competitive school, not one that lets in 80% of kids.

Merit came with the acceptance. An Honors scholarship and Fellows scholarship came later.

Still no word on departmental scholarships.

ps - if you get on their email list and apply by Dec 1st (at least this year), they waived the app fee. You’ll find a lot of colleges did this…I think 6 or 7 of the 21 we applied to.
