A couple of notes…

Students applying to a “Limited Enrollment Program” (like CS, Biological Sciences, Business, Neuroscience, etc.) may not necessarily be admitted directly to their major. Some are admitted to “Letters & Sciences” and need to complete the school’s gateway requirements to get admitted into their desired major in their sophomore year.

Some students will be offered Spring 2024 admission instead of Fall 2023. They can, however, use the Freshman Connection program to take classes in fall.

For reference: EA decisions for the Class of 2026 were released on Friday Jan 28, 2022.

When do students hear whether they were directly admitted to an LEP?

If they aren’t admitted directly, can they start in the LEP in the fall if the college receives AP/IB scores that provide credit for gateway classes?

The acceptance letter indicates the major you’ve been admitted into. It’ll list the LEP (example: “Computer Science”) if you were admitted directly, else it’ll say “Letters & Sciences”.

No. If admitted into L&S, admission into the major will only happen in the sophomore year after gateway requirements are met. I am not aware of any exception to this rule.

Proactive PSA re: Spring Admits:

I strongly encourage any applicants who are disappointed to receive a Spring admission decision tomorrow (assuming decisions are released tomorrow) to take a breath, let the disappointment wash over you but then deeply consider the Freshman Connection program that allows you to matriculate on campus in the Fall.

The concensus from my daughter and her friends is that there is no stigma whatsoever associated with being in Freshman Connection and being in Freshman Connection is not even something you will necessarily know about other students. The primary difference for a Freshman Connection student is that they take classes later in the day (3 pm - 9 pm on Mon-Thurs, 8 a - 4 pm Fri). A friend’s daughter was in Freshman Connection this past fall and is absolutely loving her experience at UMD.

Here is a link to more information about the program. Program Overview | Office of Extended Studies
