Hello! I need some advice on my next SAT step.

I got a 1900 this past time, which I am okay with since it was my first time taking it and I am not a very good test taker. This past summer I took a four week fundamental class to help me study since I don't naturally get the material and I felt as if I needed an aid in studying. Now, I would really like to pass the 2100 mark and I don't know if I should sign up for a winter intensive class at a more rigorous place, or try and self study. As I said before, I do not naturally get the material very well, and I know assistance would be nice, but I don't know if it is worth the money if it could possibly be something I do on my own. I see a lot of people on CC talk about how they self studied and got great scores, so I don't know if that could be me. Some people have told me that they think I would be better at the ACT, but I feel as if though I have invested too much time and money into the SAT to not give it another go. Thoughts? Thanks!

For me, self studying worked better. The summer before my junior year, I took an 8 week SAT class. I scored a 1590 on my first diagnostic and only went up to the 1800’s at the end of the 8 weeks. I continued taking the class until my December test in my junior year and only scored 2020. I never really put too much effort into the class. I absolutely hated test. But I had to approach the test with a positive attitude in order to do well on it.

I didn’t touch SAT stuff until 4 weeks before this October’s test. However, I approached studying differently. I concentrated on my worst section (CR) and did two CR and one other misc. section almost daily for the first 3 weeks. During the week of the test, I took a full test everyday, so five tests total. I ended up scoring 2220; all of my section scores improved. So for me self studying worked better.

I used a lot of guides from collegeconfidential to help me study. I really believe that this test is a test of your study habits. So as long as you work hard, you will get to your goals. Most importantly, I suggest only practicing with real tests. Scans of past SATs are casually available online. You just have to search for them.

Winter break is the best time for studying because you have complete control of when you want to study.

@nesnob Thanks you so much! I think I will try self-studying for the next month, and if I don’t think it’s working I will look into another class.
