Everyone pays the AC Transit fee and an assortment of other fees which is part of our registration fees which is a small part of our overall tuition fee. The term “free” is misleading because everyone gets charged $68 and only those students who frequently use the public transport around Berkeley may consider it “free.” Another “free” service is telephone service at the dorms. Because you are OOS you probably are not familiar with East Bay California. I suggest using the “free” service to get used to the surrounding and do some exploring. A bit of advice is to get the AC Transit sticker to put on your Cal 1 card as early as possible to avoid bizarrely long lines.

Sometimes you need use the AC transit pass.

For example, to get to Safeway using the AC transit class pass is the best way to go. On the weekends, BearTransit buses don’t operate, so if you ever want to get anywhere on the weekend you will need your AC transit class pass.

Trust me if you live in the dorms you will use it…well unless you have no life and just go to school and do hw/study. But if you makes friends than it is a must =)

Ah, thanks (: Where does one go to get the sticker for the AC transit buses (do we put it on the cal 1 card?) Or do we just show the bus drivers our student ID?

you get the sticker from the cal 1 card office in lower sproul. i think you can just go there as soon as you’re up there to get it. you put the sticker on your cal 1 card which is also your student ID card. when you get on the bus you just flash your card+sticker at them and continue onto the bus.

Are you sad that people were selling it or that they’re cracking down on the selling? Given how awesome the pricing is for people who regularly use AC transit, I am not surprised they would want to enforce who can use the class pass. Is there any report on the fraction of students who are heavy users? What I really want is a histogram of # times a student has used AC transit each term. I would guess it’s bimodal and that non-users subsidize the people who use AC transit every day.

I use it every day this summer commuting to S.F. I usually take the 1R or 1. The 51 is so unreliable sometimes…one day I saw 2 51s tailgating a 3rd 51 at the Shattuck Bart Station stop. w t f bus drivers!!!

How long does it take to commute to S.F. by bus? I was thinking about getting a job there during school but I don’t know if its too far/time consuming.

I frequently gripe about the inability for anyone to rely on a bus for getting anywhere, but it truly seems to apply just to the buses right around campus. I live in Oakland now and use the bus every day to get to my job in Emeryville. The R lines are the best thing ever.

Once my ClassPass expires (8/14 – cool thing about spring graduation is benefits hang on until mid-August!), I will be quite sad. $68/semester is an amazing deal. The 31-day passes cost something like $70-$80. I’ll be paying 3-4x as much as you are to use the bus reliably.

34 trips on the bus will pay for the ClassPass. That’s ~10 trips per month – 5, really, if you intend to come back from where you’re going. You will be amazed how much you’ll use the bus – grocery stores, movies, going out to eat, taking a trip to the City, exploring the Bay, getting from one side of the campus to the other when you’re feeling lazy, etc.). And complaining about how late it is becomes part of the student experience. ;)
