My school reports BOTH unweighted and weighted Class Rank and GPA to colleges. Since we have grade inflation at our school, my weighted and unweighted class ranks have a huge difference (I have 1 B and 25+ people have all A's out of a class of 340). My unweighted will be top 5% easily but my unweighted will not (once again, because of a single B).

My question is whether top colleges (i.e. HYPMS) will overlook (or not regard as heavily) my unweighted class rank/gpa and look at my weighted class rank/gpa) instead.

Honestly, most colleges recalculate your GPA anyways, and don’t really care about how you ranked. What they usually look at is the unweighted GPA and the difficulty of your classes vs the difficulty of the classes offered at your school (and it sounds like you did take advantage of challenging courses, so no problem there). One B is definitely not going to ruin your application, even if it does destroy your class rank, so don’t worry too much. Good luck!

If you attend a high school that isn’t spectacularly competitive (SAT average 2100) and don’t have a hook, you need to be very top of class for any real shot at HYPS, top 5% is unlikely.

You’re a junior… chilll. . You’re forgetting that plenty of people’s 4.0s get ruined Junior year. My school is similar and only ~10 people get to Senior year with a 4.0

So, really, this isn’t worth worrying about… at all – just do your best Junior year.
