Do all colleges assign students class ranks? Or is this just a high school thing? If so, how seriously are they taken, are they used for enterance to graduate programs?

Please excuse my ignorance, i'm a Brit. :)

I believe that it is just a measure that is used in "some" high schools in America not Colleges. As for honor societies and what not, yes colleges do have them i.e. Summa Cum Laude etc. Its impossible to rank students in college considering everyone is doing something different.

i dont know if all colleges do - but UVa does rank.

Duke ranks too

I think all that most universities do is give you a distinction if your rank falls within the top x% of students, or something along those lines. You probably won't get a solid number like 275/6345.

At the Academies, class rank is a huge determining factor as to getting your choice of service branch, such as aviation, spec ops, nuclear etc.

Princeton tells you what quintile (20% bracket) you fall in.

at my community college they say, your in good standing, and so on based on your gpa.

Fordham University tells you your exact ranking

BC tells the exact ranking
