Class Rank: Good or bad?

Hi! I'm doing some research for our school newspaper, and was wondering what people here thought about class rank in high schools. Is it a good thing for schools to rank students in their class? Is it a good thing that colleges use this as a factor in admissions? Does your school rank? Do you like your school's policy about class rank? If your school does rank, do you feel as though it fosters unhealthy competition????

Any other comments or anecdotes or rants you have would be wonderful. I appreciate your responses!!!!

Uh..I think that class ranks are unfair. Out of 465 students in my 2009 year, i am number 23 :(. The fact is though that number 1 with a 99.00 average isnt really that smart. When schools considered our class rank, they didnt consider what classes we are taking. Number 1 in my class takes all Easy classes, i mean like REALLY easy classes, and me an my friends who take ALL advanced classes are put behind on the list just because of our scores. In result i think it is unfair.

Weighted rank is fair, and pretty much necessary for regular public schools; for magnets and prep schools, it's not too useful

weighted rank is good... although it still isn't perfect. IPC Honors and AP Physics C are given the same weighting at my school.

Rank is good at public schools like mine. It should also be accurate though. It should only include the last 3 or 4 semesters, because otherwise, there are smart people who might take a year or two before realizing they have to work harder. When they finally perform to their potential, their rank has suffered. This doesn't hurt the people who work hard all 4 years, because... they continue to work hard. Regardless of which semesters are used for calculation of rank, they will still be at the top because they'll have done well in those semesters.
