Class Rank -How/When Does Your School Compute It

Wondering how schools compute rank. My D's school just announced class rankings. Since she just found out in May of senior yr, we were not able mention her class rank in her college aps. But, I have heard that colleges consider class rank and that some students put that they're in top 10% or whatever in their aps. So, do some schools give rank out as early as jr yr so they can be used in college aps? Is it considered a solid class ranking if it's only based on 1st 2 yrs of HS, plus 1 quarter term of jr yr? That would mean 7 quarters of school are not included in the calculation.
I also wonder about giving out rank before grades for all terms are available. D will not have grades for her last quarter for 2 wks. Silly question -- but couldn't grades for 4th quar potentially change rankings? I know only 1 quarter is missing in calculation, but in large school with lots of kids with very close in gpas , maybe it could make a difference in someone getting into top 10, and someone at 11 . . . .

Collmom, Our school provides class ranks at teh end of Junior year for apps. This would actually provide three years worth of data. They are then updated each semester so when GCs send out their recs they have the latest info. That first semester update would not be available for ED applications but would for RD since it happens in Jan.

Our public HS provides class rank in the fall of senior year, only including grades up to the end of junior year; no idea if it is recalculated again later (daughter graduated last year without another rank other than the one from the bebinning of senior year)

Our private HS (D2) does not calculate a cumulative GPA or a class rank…only provides a school profile with unweighted GPA ranges and percentagesof students in those ranges for junior year only…yes, interesting…

Wish we had had class rank available in time for college ap (ED). D made top 10%, but wasn’t able to put in her ap, since she just received it this month (of sr yr). Interesting that some schools provide rank using thru jr yr, ignores grades for all of sr yr, but at least it’s avail to use in ap. Thanks for your feedback.

My daughter’s high school calculated rank after each marking period, although it didn’t appear on the report card. Students could go to the GC and ask for their rank (it’s not a very competitive high school, so few students did this, but I know some who knew what their rank was after freshman year).

Senior year, rank appeared on the transcript – and was recalculated after each quarter. So the rank on the transcript for ED applications was a brand-new calculation. Rank was then recalculated after the last marking period senior year to determine the top students for graduation.

We get our rank recalculated every semester since freshman year. However, it is not on our report cards, so we must go in to get a copy of our transcripts. It is based on our weighed GPA. :P

Just like rmadden15 says, our school also calculates our class rank based on GPA every semester. If your grades change it doesn’t reflect on your class rank until the end of the semester.

We calculate GPA by (A=4, B=3, C=2) and so on. Honors classes add an extra point and AP classes add two extra points.

My school calculates class rank at the end of junior year and gives them to us October of senior year. It’s really quite irritating, actually, because I only took 1 AP my junior year and plan on taking 4 senior year, but the added weight of APs on my GPA won’t affect my class rank.

My school determines class rank after junior semester 2 and after senior semester 1, then puts them on students’ official transcripts if requested.

it doesn’t

Its already March and my school hasn’t changed my GPA or Rank.

My school does not rank. At my school AP and IB are weighted, but honors classes are not and they actually are often harder than AP classes. So, I’m glad my school doesn’t rank because my worst grades have came in honors classes.

We don’t rank, but Valedictorian and Salutatorian are determined by highest unweighted GPA. (Although neither gives a speech, that’s based on auditions.)

We are informed of our rank after each semester starting freshman year.

My school gives us our rank at the beginning of junior year, then again at the beginning of senior year.
