How important is one's class rank in the admissions process? My class rank is currently 39 out of 292 students. I'm not sure if I can get it up 10 spots in this one semester to be in the top 10% (I'm a junior). At my school, honors classes are not weighted and an A- in Crafts is regarded better than a B+ in Honors Phyics.

Class rank is usually pretty important, especially at the most selective schools such as Penn. I would work on getting into the top 10%, otherwise your chances are looking slim.

Maybe your counselor will explain in his/her rec? Honestly, if you’re getting a B+ in honors physics and a lot of other classes you probably won’t be able to compete with others at Penn (unless that was just for argument’s sake)

speaking of ranks, would it be considered top 10% if im number 53 out of 528? because that puts me at a 10.04%… does the .04 really get me out of the “10% range?”

I would hope they round up haha, i mean you can’t really have a person ranked 52.8th, so im assuming the cut off point would be 53rd.

haha yeah i really hope so. although the exact 10% is probably still risky.

Class rank is the most important aspect of your high school record. Honestly, they look at that more than anything else, and it is used to calculate your academic score which they use to compare you to all other applicants.

^ Actually, the overall transcript is by far more important. I assure you that a valedictorian who doesn’t take challenging classes when available has a very low chance of getting in.

I got in and I was only in top 20% (top 19%). However I applied ED and I am double legacy with all kinds of other ties to the university.

If my school reports no rank, how will this impact admissions? This year, the top 25% of my class was inducted into NHS, but how exactly will they look at students from schools without a ranking system?

I’m told that Penn admissions will figure it out. They will look at past applicants, other current applicants, and your school’s data sheet. And don’t worry, I didn’t make NHS at my school and I still got into Penn.

Oh ok as long as they know that I did my absolute best lol. Yeah I got into NHS, but it’s not really a huge deal at my school. Fairly low standards.

But what is included in the school date sheet? My school is extremely small, maybe 3 kids total in grade might apply to UPenn (most likely 2, if not just me). We did have 2 UPenn kids 2 years ago I think.

It’s called a “School Profile” - ask your guidance counselor. Ours has a section called “class rank computation and interpretation.”

Oh ok thanks pennboy25 for all of your help :)
