Class Rank Importance: The Deal or No Deal of the Application? Truly Holistic Review?

If one has an unweighted class rank in the top 11%, but an otherwise HYP level application (essay, recommendations, transcript, class rigor, unique extracurricular's, scores, upward trend, etc. etc. - great everything except URM/Athlete/Development Case), is it still possible for one to get into HYP or get large scholarships at a private university of the level of schools such as Drexel or Fordham, or other such schools?

A rank in the top 11% might not cut it for HYP, but for Fordham and Drexel that's no problem, especially Drexel.

bum p

It depends on your HS. If it's one of the top "national" privates or a public like New Trier, TJ or Bronx Science, then yeah, top 11% is still pretty darn good. But, if its a run-of-the-mill (competitive) HS, then top 11% probably will "not cut it" w/o a really unique EC.

I am with Bluebayou on this. You need to talk to your GC about how HPY and other top schools have treated kids in the second dectile, with your academic profile. They will know this better than anyone. If your school does not have many kids going to those school, top 11% or even top 5% may not be good enough. Those schools look for the top 1-3 kids from a school unless there is something else striking to attract them. Certain schools where the kids are pre selected and have a history of performing well in college are where some leeway is sometimes given. Even then, it is a tough go.

^ Well, my school often gets like 20-30 ish ivy acceptances per year (about 8% of the class)...apparently in years past people from my school in the 2nd decile with ok ec's but great essays have been able to get into the 'lower' ivies but never the top ivies. My school has some special relationship with Cornell though, they take like 5% of the class each year.

If you attend a very competitive, very prestigious HYP-feeder school, 11% might be sufficient. Otherwise, I think it's a long shot.

^ long-shot (1%) still better than no-shot :D

B ump

it depends on your school-you should apply...i mean they ivies are a long shot for all
