Class Rank Question

How significant rank in the school during College Admissions selection? If it plays important role, then many schools will not report class ranks, so

1) How colleges know a particular student's rank (or percentage) from the school that does not report ?
2) Will reporting his/her rank in percentage (as they can not guess exactly the rank) in common app is good idea? if so which place is the best to report.

My D. is in top 1 % (counselor said but school does not rank students). Please share your thoughts and help her. Thank you.

1- Even if the HS doesn’t rank they will provide a HS profile which will give deciles or something similar to generally tell where you land in the class.
2- Yes, it’s a good idea to self report as much as possible.

It depends on the college as to how important class rank is. See section C7 of the school’s common data set, or the admissions tab for the http://www.collegedata.com entry for the school.

Very useful information, Thank you @Erin’s Dad and @ ucbalumnus
