Class rank question

to stand a good chance at upenn selective college what rank would you have to be in at your high school. I’m at a public school with the international baccaleurate program (IB, magnet school). I know admission is based on wayy more than rank, but just to know what I should aim for…and I also know the better your rank, the better the chance. So, is top 10% the minimum really. Please don’t tell me that, there are recruited athletes with 2.0s that get in because I’m talking in general! And to be in the top 5% should you aim for all a +'s?

I hardly know anyone here who wasn't in the top 10% of their class... "in general" this is where you want to be. I don't know what you mean about the top 5% thing but, uh, well yes you should try to get high grades. Lol.

thanks =]

by the way, how do you like penn? would u reccomend it

Definitely :D

It's hard to answer that question without knowing more about your school. For example, in our HS kids in the top 5% do not have straight As. In most high schools that would not be the case. There are some competitive public and private schools that send the top 20% or even more to Ivys or their equivalents, and others where you might need to be at the very top.

But as a general rule, for a school that ranks I would say yes, unless you have a big hook you will want to be in the top 10% if not 5% of your class.

From a class of 100 students... Im #15 approx... Which leaves me out of the 10% rank

However according to my GC she says that I do have excellent grades and am competitive enough...

My class is competitive as hell...

You must be rank 1 or you have no chance to survive--

I'm #38 and got rejected, two other kids who are ranked either in the 20s or the teens were also rejected, my friend was #1 and got waitlisted. There's about 350ish kids in our class.

Who knows anymore.

Does your HS send many kids to Penn? Try going into your guidance counselor's office to see if you can get the list of past acceptances to Penn from your school. Many schools will give you SAT and GPA stats of past students cross referenced by the colleges that accepted/rejected them. For schools that do this, you can get a general idea of where successful applicants from your school have been ranked in the past.

My school is sending at least 9 kids. 5 got in early and 4 of the 7 that got in regular (that I know of) are going.

My school does not do ranking or GPA. I am sure that penn "calculates" GPA, but my school does not do it. I am definitely in the top 20% (out of 170) but beyond that I have no idea.

we had a bunch of people applying early in my school...i think most out of the top 20 people (out of a class of 474) got rejected...i know one girl who was like 25 or so who got deferred, and a kid who was like 18 also deferred...me at 13 got in, but our valedictorian also got deferred...in the regular round only one more person got in and she was our number 2...so you gotta be ranked high...but on the other hand ranks, not everything, apparent by our val getting deferred and then rejected..none of the deferees got accepted..it was crazy

Last time I checked, it said that the average person APPLYING for the class of 2010 was in the 96th percentile of their class. (<a href="http://ivysuccess.com/upenn_2010.html%5B/url%5D">http://ivysuccess.com/upenn_2010.html</a>)</p>

In my school, #2 (CAS/RD) was waitlisted, #5 was accepted (me) (CAS/ED), #9 was rejected (Nursing/ED defferal to RD), #13(ish) was accepted (CAS/ED), and two people out of the top 20 were rejected... (Wharton/RD). There are 564 kids in my class. Public school.

Thats all I know

You have no chance to survive make your time.

You really have to be in the top 0.029 percentile of your class. Don't listen to what other people say.

Everyone here is just sabotaging you. EVEN THE KIDS AT PENN. OH
EMME
GEE

JCoveney, anytime you phonetically spell "OMG" you need to accompany it with an . You are so stupid.

OH EMME GEe

If your relying on your grades; Number 1 with impressive grades.
Otherwise it depends entirely on your EP, it’s diversity and qualitative/quantitative amount.
