With a 3.93 UW, I am not in the top 10% of my class (there are lots of kids who take easy classes and have a 4.0). Unfortunately, my school only uses the UW system and and therefore does not take into consideration my many AP classes. My school aslo "doesn't rank" but I think sends out where I am in the class. If it were to use a weighted system, I would be in the top 2-5 %. Is it just me or is this a big problem?!?!?

Yeah, that is a big problem. a 3.93 GPA is excellent and should be in the top 10%, if not better.

Wouldn't it be better if years were weighted as well? For example, my best academic year was in grade 11 when I finished 3rd. Grade 11 is usually the toughest year for most students because the 10-11 jump is the biggest, in addition to all the standardized tests that take up study time. Unfortunately for me, since some kids really grubbed their marks in the fluff years (gr. 9 and 10), they're probably ranked higher than me even though they fell a lot when it counted (gr. 11). Oh well.

In My school, i'm ranked in the 40th percentile, with a 3.6, A public School with 512 kids, that Doesn't rank....... and I'm taking 3 AP classes a year. Boo Hiss on the School Board :)

duke, i thought you said your gpa was 3.34

i agree about weighting 11th grade more than 9th. I was ranked 88th in my class of 434 after 9th, 55th after 10th and 38th after 11th (estimated my 11th only rank was probably top 8 or 10). Class rank is dumb even on weighted systems. My school weights honors the same as AP and standard level IB same as higher level, which makes no sense at all.

My 9-11th grade high school did rank and I was 6/422 (top 1.5%), but my new school does not and I'm 17/344. BOO!!!

Here is my sad story.

I went to a school with no honors courses or APs for freshman/sophomores.

I was 9/400, though class rank was not reported. I now attend a school with full loads of honors and AP courses for all grades, a plethora of advanced courses you can take.

My school ranks by weighted GPA on the 100 point scale, I'm now barely in the top 15%.

So colleges will see a crappy class rank, and I'll have to write an explanation.

fakeplastic, i would ask your guidance or principal to write the colleges a letter explaining that class rank in your school is based on unweighted gpas and therefore students taking easier classes have a much easier time getting a higher class rank. Your school is messed up because i never heard of a school basing class rank on unweighted gpas. It is a big deal that you are unfairly excluded from the top 10% because class rank does matter a lot.

i thought the schools look at the rigor of the classes you take and not specifically the class ranking too much... when i went to various school tours, they specifically emphasized that the schools get the info about the schools (number of honors/ap classes) and compare it to the students.. so that a person with all regular and 4.0 wouldn't get lucky chance against a person with 3.9 but with 3 aps get what i'm saying?

ya thanks for the input guys

Yeah I'm in the exact same situation (3.93 GPA too) and all these ppl with easy classes are pushing me down in class rank. It's seriously annoying. I have no idea why they would chooses not to rank (although we have a very sports-oriented school, and a lot of the athletes have 4.0s w/ no Aps or honors, and some of these people have parents in the counseling office. Not that I'm impying anything......hehe)
