Class rank... to include, or not to include?

My school doesn't automatically publish class rankings, but we can request to include it on our transcripts. I'm currently about 40 out of 440-something in my class, barely scraping the bottom of the top 10%. My UW GPA is 3.7, and my W is 3.95 (ultra-competitive school that only weights for APs). 2380 SAT, 5's on all AP tests, 770+ on all subject tests, pretty good EC's, fairly solid "leadership."

Will rankings help me or hurt me? I honestly don't know. Should I omit them from my transcript and write that my school doesn't do rankings on the Common App?

Would "meh" rankings be better than a blank, especially for colleges that don't consider freshman grades? Also, if other people from my school are applying to the same competitive colleges, does it look bad for me if I don't include my own rank?

It won’t hurt to include it. Colleges will see a breakdown of GPAs in your school and the ranges in which students fall. They will be able to more or less predict your rank, which is rather respectable.

The trouble is that a lot of people at my school take a bunch of easy classes and get 3.9’s or 4.0’s, so the scale’s kind of skewed.

Colleges will be able to see how many APs you took compared to other students. You will be fine either way :)

Your guidance counselor will also indicate on his/her report the rigor of your courses compared to others in your school. The fact that others took easier courses and have a higher rank is not going to affect you.

I guess I’ll opt in, then. Thanks guys! :)

Was ranked 53/513 then I moved schools
