What colleges see depends on what your school puts on your transcript. At my school, colleges see my letter grade in each class, not my number grade. If your school operates on a 10 point scale, colleges will also see pluses and minuses. Keep in mind that 90+ is not a 4.0. A- are 3.67 on a 4.0 scale, I believe (my school operates on a 7-point scale with no pluses and minuses, so I could be wrong).

And it’s important to remember that there’s no exact formula for admission at many schools. All of the facets of your transcript are considered, and there’s no exact weight for each of them.

For an Ivy??? oh and i’m 33/370 because class rank is cumulative (i think) and my grade 9,10 marks were lower than this year’s.

I’m in the gifted program atmy school, in ontario, and i’ve taken full courselads every year, and as many gifted courses as possible. I’m assuming rigorousness of courses taken is considered by adcoms?

Erin’s Dad: you didn’t really answer this question: “say 4.0 GPA is 90+ in every course. if 30 out of 300 people have 4.0, but all have different 100-point scores and when submitting applications, the 4.0 is sent, how can they differentiate between #1 and #30?”

There are some situations where ranks do not come in handy at all. I’m in the inaugural class at a 6-12 magnet school for the arts. Fifteen seniors will be graduating, all of us smart and talented. Those who weren’t doing well all transferred into their districted high school instead of staying for senior year. Most of us have taken the same classes all four years, and we are all taking the same rigorous course load this year. I’m ranked 7/15 (47%) with a 4.23 GPA, but our number 1/15 is barely in the top 7%, number 2/15 is in the top 14%, etc.

Oh, and our school is required by the county to rank.

Obviously, ranks are not always reliable, and in cases like these, I expect colleges to look at GPAs instead. the 6 in front of me are all well-qualified, but it doesn’t mean that I am any less-qualified than them.

I have a 2.98 and I am just outside of top half! Which is bs in most schools I would be in top 40%, but I go to a very good public high school.
