I'm going to a new school next year in a new state. Will my rank come from only my junior year (this coming year) or from my previous gpa?

It will depend on the policy of your new school, but I don’t think the policy in place at my kids’ school is unusual. My kids’ school will transfer in credits from other schools to be counted toward graduation, but it won’t use grades from other schools for class rank. So my guess–and it’s only a guess–is that your prior grades will not be used to figure your class rank. If your new school even ranks; many don’t.

When your guidance counselor in the new school writes the school letter that goes with the Secondary School Report on the Common Application, he or she may well mention that you transferred into the school, and so your class rank excludes grades earned in your old school. (You can, and should, ask your guidance counselor about this in the spring of your junior year–or no later than early fall of your senior year.) You can also mention it yourself. The Common Application provides you a place to give any relevant information that you haven’t been able to mention elsewhere in your application.

For me, it only was my sophomore and junior year. They disregarded freshman year.
