what do colleges think of your class rank if you only have 40-45 students in your class? I think I'm 6 or 7...

well, if you're 6 or 7, it means you're in the top 15% or so...

Basically the same as being 60 or 70 out of 400/450 students.

Just keep in mind that the val in a class of 500 may get a bit more recognition than the val in a class of 30 simply because there are many more people.

How does this look:

Medical Magnet School

Top 20%-Top 25%

Class of like 170

Anything outside of the top 10% makes tope colleges really tough. After top 20%, I would say its close to impossible. Unless you have AMAZING SATs, EC's or are a recruited athelete/and too a lesser extent, URM.

I'm URM-Mexican American.

Actually, my school only has about 45 kids per grade and most of the girls going to Ivies this yr (7) and from past yrs were not in the top 10%. None of them were URMs, winners of national competitions, or recruited athletes (except 1)

We don't rank but I don't know how much info in terms of deciles or anything they give colleges.

My school gives the GPA, rank, number of people in class, and quartile.

I'm sure colleges can and will just take my rank, divide it, and multiply by a 100 than just looking at being in the top quartile, right?

:

^ Right. They will use the rank that makes you look the best.

Makes me look best?

If I'm in the top 20% or top 25%

What would top quartile mean to a college (statistically it means top 25%)

I graduated valedictorian from a very small school that did not rank. Class rank isnt nearly as important as other statistics. I honestly wouldn't worry about it. Many times ranking is decided by a one-hundredth or one-thousandth of a point difference. Ranking is more of an ego boost than anything. :) Your merits will show alone, with out your class rank, which can always be ommitted from an application.

But I've heard that not being in the top 10% basically takes you out of the running for most Ivies.
