Ok, what is class rank? Do they put students in order from the highest GPA to the lowest? I've just recieved my transcript and it says that my class rank is 28 out of 842. I have a GPA of 3.92, so does that mean there are 27 people who have higher GPAs than me or what? Btw, you probably can see that my school isn't very competitive. What if I was 1 out of 842?? Do colleges have to choose students from every high school? Would the class rank raise my chances of getting selected? Thanks!

Yes, being ranked 28th means 27 people have higher GPAs. You are still well within your the top 10% of your class which will be fine for most non ivy top schools.

Oh and you must go to a massssive school. I'm not sure what you mean by your last couple of sentences. Obviously be ranked first would help you..

Yeah my school has a population of 3.5k students =P overcrowded... (EDIT) Thanks Btw.

Class rank is ranking based on your GPA. Therefore if you are ranked 1/842, then you have the highest gpa in your grade. Yes, there are 27 peopole who have higher grades than you. Colleges definitely don't have to choose kids from every highschool. Rank does matter but not as much as everyone thinks. Two years ago, the valedictorian of my school was rejected by Harvard, UPENN, Yale, and Princeton, but a person ranked 7 who was an extremely passionate and acclaimed writer got into Princeton easily. However, if you really want to increase your chances of getting into top schools, make sure you are probably in the top ten of your grade. But don't worry if your rank is not 1. Colleges want to see passion, not only your grades. Be good at something and just do well in school. Excel at something and show your passion for it and dont worry tooo much about grades. Being ranked 7 instead of 1 doesnt mean anything if you have something else you're good at. Colleges understand that the difference between a ranked 1 person and ranked 7 person may be a difference of like 0.5 in grade avareges. Therfore, dont worry about grades, but try to be unique original and talented. Supersede the valedictorian in an extracurricular activities. I know a girl who was ranked like 20, got a pretty good sat score like a little above a 2000 and got into princeton. But that's now what got her in. She had a hook. Her hook was that she was a really really good writer. she won tons of awards and even had several essays and a book published.

hmm ok.. but it would be best if you were #1 and had a lot of other extras. I'm have passion in playing piano.. do you have to win awards and all that in order for the colleges to see your passion?? I mean what if you really like playing but you don't win anything or go to any concerts, etc.?? Is one passion good enough? I'm kind of worried about ecs and the "passion" info.

of course it would be great if you were ranked 1 and you did all that stuff. but the thread starter was not 1, so i'm just providing some consolation. It''s not imossible to get into ivies if you're not ranked 1
academics are not everything.

Carpe Diem. Make your mark on the world show your willingness to push yourself. It doesnt matter what you do, show your passion, and if it's something weird like rock collecting and you havet gotten any awards for your rock collection, then write an essay about HOW YOU LOVE ROCKS. I'm dead serious. It's pretty unique and if you do a good job, the essay CAN help you a whole lot.

lol ok I see. Thanks!
