How important is class rank? My school doesn’t rank but they provide grade distribution like 33% was 3.51-4.0 and etc etc…they said at the top of the chart that my school doesnt rank…so what will colleges make of the chart? How much weight do they give to class rank, b/c top ten% at one school isnt top ten% at another ARGH i keep stressing that point! Colleges can be so stupid… Also, if my school doesn’t rank, then what do colleges mean by “if your school doesn’t rank then we will consider other indicators”?

The role of class rank varies among colleges from being of little or no importance to a key factor. Note, however, that those that consider it a key factor do not hold the lack of your school's ranking against you and instead focus on your grades and courses and what they may already know about the high school and where you might stand among others. To give an example: UIUC considers class rank and test score as the two most important factors. It has a computerized system it uses for admission where many with high scores in both are essentially admitted with little or no further review of their individual file. If your school does not rank, it simply means that your file must be manually reviewed to make the decision.

thankkss...anyone else got nething?

As drusba says, it depends on the college. What may happen at the more selective colleges is that they will look at the chart and your GPA - and get an idea of your approximate rank. But since this is not an official rank, it may not be counted in the USNWR data. Since many of the most competitive schools don't rank, the % in the top ten % figures may be a bit inflated.

If you school has a listing of students that were accepted/wl/rejected by GPA and SAT at your colleges of interest, it will give you a truer picture of where you stand.

I have a similar question:

I assume there is a big difference between being in the top 10% and the top 5%, but how significant are the differences between being in the top 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1%? I would imagine being in the top 1% would differ from the others (2 to 5%), but between top 2 to 5%, I would imagine they would all kind of blend together. I am probably wrong on this, but I just need to know!

i think if ur in the top five percent thats the same as being in the top 5 4 3 2 1 and colleges will hardly notice the difference....i read somewhere that the difference between a 3.9 and a 4.0 is very little, and those ppl are judged based on EC's and stuff more to differentiate them.....also i have another question...as ohio_mom said i should...i did look at the chart and my unweighted GPA is below the average for ppl accepted in my high school to the college i want to go to, but my weighted GPA and my SAT were both higher...what should i make of this information?
