class ranking

how do high schools rank you? is it from each of the three years? or do they find the average of the three years and then rank?

i think it's usually cumulative (frosh+soph+jr+sr) as you go on.

Yup. It's cumulative ranking at my school, too.
I don't like how it's set up, though. Students getting all A's in lower-level classes would get a higher rank than someone with the most rigorious schedule, getting a B in one subject.

at our school, you get a weighted gpa if you take honors classes (but not ap's though), so even if you get a b in a hard class, you'll still have a higher rank than someone gettins all a's in easier classes.

My school doesn't use weighted GPAs. I wish that they did, though. Tons of people have really high ranks because of easier classes. The people that have lots of APs, etc end up with lower rankings. :(

Is there a solution to this problem that you guys know of other than weighting?

There is no weighting at our school either so the AP Euro. teacher gives us an extra 5%. So the grading scale looks like below I think
90%=A
87%=A-
85%=B+
80%=B
77%=B-

However, the extra 5% that he supposedly gives us does not really change anything because he won't tell you your grade. Thus, if you rub the teacher the wrong way you can get a B or C even if you ace all tests and projects:(

it's still pretty stupid because our weighting system equalizes ap's and honors... and there's a huge difference in difficulty

Wow zpmqxonw I would love that scale!

My AP USH scale is

95% A
93% A-
89% B+
86%B
83%B-
79% C+
79%C+

And our Honors English has 91% A-. And (sorry for straying off topic), my school does GPA by year, and then does it cumulative at the end of the first semester of Senior Year.

Wait, but doesn't an AP look better than honors on apps?

it does... but then again a number 1 rank looks a lot better than 24...

My school uses UC GPA as the GPA they use to rank students @_@

I'm lost, why don't the schools use a more streamlined/better method of ranking? I have no clue about any of this stuff since I'm not in highschool yet.

Our school has the same problem that Glass_Shard mentioned. Right now, rank one is held by a guy who is taking only 2 honors classes and no APs whatsoever. It can be very annoying for those of us who are taking full loads with all APs and Honors classes available. Grrrrr....

agreed... but what's also very annoying is that honors and ap are apparantly equal in the grand scheme of things

very true... i've learned that AP classes don't count for much when you get to college even though it supposedly helps you in the admission process.

i'M STIIL LOST!! Why doesn't it count for much since it is so much harder?

it's just how the schools work, u'll be equally disturbed when you start hs, and they rank the dumbasses higher than you

lol. So basically the only plus of an AP is for self benefit and knowledge, even though it can hinder you from getting accepted to collages?

Exactly!!!!
