Hey everyone. I was wondering how much class ranks count. See I go to a pretty competitive school and I'm thinking I'll get top ten percent but not much better than that.

Not that the Academic Index matters much, but if I say my school doesn't have a class rank, which my old one didn't, I get a 9 out of 9, if I type in my projected class rank, 60/790, I get a 6 out of 9.

Also, my California school did not offer advanced classes for freshmen so all I had was Honors Geometry. My new school does and they weight GPA's, so my class rank will be significanly lower than my competition that was able to take honors courses freshmen year here in Texas.

I'm considering Harvard because I have relatives there and it's a great school. But I'm thinking the class rank may hurt my chances and wondering what my chances would be if I went back to California, which I probably am going to end up doing, and then I wouldn't have a class rank.

Anyone going to answer my post?

I really don't think it will matter all that much. Its a bit of a hassle to move to California just because they don't rank IMO... I think the adcoms usually estimate your %ile if your school doesn't rank.

Yeah I knew about that. Sentient, I was moving back anyway, I'd be crazy to leave Texas when I like it so much just to get rid of a class rank system I didn't like.

Don't worry about my personal matters and moving and all that.

Thanks for the advice dude. Yeah I figured they'd have some way to figure things out.

Anyone else have an opinion or something to add.

Personally for my school it is best that we don't rank. At good private, or even public school ranking can hurt you. The whole class is strong and the school knows that. They will judge you against other applicants but not in the ranking sense.

That's my point of view right there. My school is really competitive, a lot of smart kids. I may have been better off had I gone to the affiliated previous schools but I transferred from California so I had a different education. It would be better if their was no rank. Benefit of my California school I may end up back at if we decide to move back is that there are no ranks, however if you are valedictorian or one of the two salutatorians, you are recognized. So it's either good or nothing. Can't hurt you.
