I have a question for current UNC students, parents of UNC students, and people who have been to CTOPS recently. I went through the First-Year Guide a few weeks ago and made a list of 15 to 20 classes I would be fine with taking freshman year. I went on Student Central the other day, and I was kind of horrified to see practically every class I entered into the system come up as CLOSED. Haha. There were maybe two classes from my list still open. I go to CTOPS in July, and I'm getting a little worried about what classes I'm going to end up taking. Eeek! Are all these classes really closed, or are there some slots left open for CTOPS people? Is the Drop/Add day truly effective in fixing schedules? Could someone explain how Drop/Add works? Thank you so much; I really appreciate it. I know I'm not going to get every class I want, and I accept that, but I was just kind of shocked to see so many classes closed- even beginner-level courses. Thank you again!!! : )

I went to ctops on the 14/15 and there were spots open in most of the beginning classes. Most of the cool electives and the upper level classes were closed though.

But don't worry, I've heard that everything gets fixed on the add/drop day.

We were at CTOPS June 21-22 and my daughter only signed up for two classes she really wanted, two others I guess she will just try, and another she probably doesn't really even need - so she will do drop/add. It is better if you are in one of the earlier groups at CTOPS - my daughter was in group 12. All of the fitness classes and spanish classes were full. We checked on her laptop before she went in and some of the classes that it showed open were not on the classes available to pick. I don't really understand what that was about. I believe they only give you a section of classes to pick from. They said they have 75 first year seminars with 20 students in each. There are only two slots available for each CTOPS for each first year seminars. Well, my daughter didn't get one of the seminars either. Hopefully, you will be in a earlier group. I think that will help. Good Luck!!!

also, someone gets on the computer and closes most of the classes and reopens them when a new session of CTOPS arrives. i was in group 11, so my class selection was pretty sad, but i didn't hear of anyone in groups 1-6 who didn't get everything they wanted (with the exception of 1st year seminars)

Thanks everybody! I feel a little better now: ) I'll just go to CTOPS with an open mind and not worry too much about my schedule. Thank goodness for Drop/Add... : )

Yikes! Will ANY classes be open at all during the last CTOPS in August???????

the same number of spots are reserved per CTOPS session, so the likelihood of getting the classes you want is based on what group number you get (i think it goes up to 13 or 14) moreso than the dates you sign up for

hey where do you find the list of classes that you can sign up for again? is there a website that i can look through or something?

Yeah, it's in the First-Year Guide.

yea, the guide can be found here in PDF format:

make sure u read it before going to CTOPS, it is very beneficial. u will also get a printed copy there
