Class Registration Thread (links to everything!)

UCSD's website is good, but not great. Here's a step-by-step guide to registering for classes.

What classes should I take?

It mainly depends on your college and major. The college determines what GEs (general education requirements) you need to take, and the major has its own requirements. Additionally, UCSD has two requirements that must be met for graduation: the UC entry-level writing requirement and the American history and institutions requirement. When figuring out which classes to take, keep in mind that the classes you want may be full.

So what are my college's GEs?

And what classes does my major require?
Below is a link to the UCSD '06/'07 online catalog. It has the requirements for every major.

http://www.ucsd.edu/catalog/front/courses.html

In what order should I take my classes?
Because your major might change and your college won't, it's a good idea to complete your college GEs first. These pages show recommended plans for each major.

What is the fall schedule?
To see what times classes meet, go to https://www-act.ucsd.edu/cgi-bin/tritonlink.pl/2/students/academic/classes/schedule_of_classes.pl. This shows the the schedules of all the fall classes. Although many classes appear full, this is only because the spots reserved for freshmen have not been unlocked yet. Once freshmen begin registering, you'll see many more open spots.

How do I sign up for classes?

UCSD uses an online registration system. You can go online from any computer to register for classes. You have to go to the tritonlink website and use WebReg. But before you do that, it's a good idea to understand how the system works. This page (http://registrar.ucsd.edu/studentlink/WebRegTriton.htm) shows how to use WebReg. You need internet explorer to view the slideshow. Once you can register (look below to see when) and you've seen the WebReg tutorial, use WebReg itself at https://www-act.ucsd.edu/cgi-bin/tritonlink.pl/2/students/academic/classes/acd/webreg.pl.

What time can I register for classes?
UCSD staggers the time that students can register for classes. Freshmen registration times are determined by lottery. After the fall quarter, registration priority is determined by the number of credits you have. That way, seniors only needing certain classes to graduate get high priority. Regents scholars and other groups get priority registration too. To see what time you have, visit https://www-act.ucsd.edu/cgi-bin/tritonlink.pl/3/students/student_regtime.pl. You don't need to register at this time. This is just the first time you can register. However, you'll probably want to register as soon as possible so you can get the classes you want.

I still have more questions. Where can I find answers?

Later this year, you might be able to use Virtual Advisor (https://hops.ucsd.edu/virtualadvisor/) to get answers to questions about your class schedule. If you have questions for a specific department or about a major, you can find contact information for every department here: https://tritonlink.ucsd.edu/portal/site/tritonlink-preview/menuitem.b4448692267a11256ec5e210514b01ca?storyID=17733. Your specific college should also have information and academic advising available.

More general information is available at the new student website (http://newstudent.ucsd.edu) and on the tritonlink academic tab (https://tritonlink.ucsd.edu/portal/site/tritonlink-preview/menuitem.3b7a7823340e70256ec5e210514b01ca/)

You can also ask questions in this thread and on CC. Many other students have probably asked the same questions as you, and some might already have the answers.

wow...thanks A LOT...i'm sure this will help A LOT more people too :)

Oh man Slorg, dont make me 1Up you with some guide of my own on something.

Cuz my guide will kick your guide's A$$

Slorg, you're perfect.

thanks slorg...you're pretty much my hero now

Wow its really nice of u 2 put something lyk this up !!

u must hav a lot of time on ur hands buddy..... very helpful info though

wow, thanks!

Yeah, I had too much time on my hands one night. I wish I could edit it though. I left important things out.

does that mean if we get august 25th, (the last day complete online enrollment) a lot of classes may be full?

I think it really depends on the class. But it's a good idea to have backup classes and schedules in case some classes are full. Anyway, there are more open spaces than students.

http://ling.ucsd.edu/Language/faq/faq.html#2
I just spent about 2 hours trying to find this link. Evidently Spanish 1C is not offered the first quarter. And that p@##@# me off.

"Do I have to take the level that I tested into?
-Yes.
To get credit you must take the level you placed in. If you wish, you may take
the next level higher than your placement, but you cannot go down to a lower level."

Does this make anyone else mad?

Nevermind

Thanks

hah, guess you should have bombed the placement test then :-x

Yeah... I probably would have tried to do a little worse had I read the FAQ's BEFORE I took the test...

For sixth college it says:
"BREADTH REQUIREMENTS - 12 courses
(AP OR IB Credit may be used to satisfy only 1 course in each area)"

Can community college courses be used to satisfy the rest the requirements for a certain area?

Why the frick does Chem 4 have a 3 hour lab. What the he!!.

Ha, Slorg. Awesome post. I had to find everything for myself... should've looked on here first. Thanks, though.

does anyone know where we can find the final exam schedule for each class?

nevermind i found it
