Class registration waitlist

Since being on the waitlist counts as part of the maximum number of units you’re allowed to register for, when does it make sense to use it? Obviously if that is the last class you need before graduation, but say in more typical cases. It seems like if there are other classes you can take instead, signing up for those would be better than sitting on a waitlist. Is there that much movement that people actually get enrolled off a waitlist?

If you are waitlising for classes that are required for your major, than it is likely a good idea to stay on the waitlist if you are in the top 10. If you are waitlisting for a G.E. or an elective, than it is better to sign up for another class. Always try to get mandatory classes for your major out of the way first even if it means waitlisting. And after the semester starts, there are usually some G.E. classes still open you could add in the first week if you don’t get into the waitlist one.

during your first 2 years, you really shouldn’t be on the waitlist since you can take a plethora of other courses. If there is a class you need to take as a prereq and you want to take the other class the next quarter, then you should probably stick with a waitlist. Depending on the class, if you’re in top 5, you have an excellent chance of getting in.

Thanks for the guidelines! Does the registration system tell you what number you are on the waitlist, or is that only after you put yourself on it?

you can only see what number you are if you are actually registered and on the waitlist.
