Class registration? What's going on here?

I haven't received any correspondence at all from NYU regarding course registration for fall 2010, and when I logged on to Albert on NYU home it said that I couldn't register until noon on june 15th, even though "registration begins on april 12th." Then, when I looked through the course catalog it seemed like most classes were already full! What is happening?

Registration began on April 12th for continuing NYU students. Are you an incoming freshman? If so, you will register at Summer Orientation. June 15th is the first day of the first CAS Freshman Orientation session so I guess if you are registered for that session that would indeed be your earliest opportunity to register for Fall 2010. Don’t worry that many of the MAP classes and sections say “closed”. They aren’t really closed, they are on reserve for Freshman Orientation. It’s my understanding that they hold a specific number of spots in each class and section for each of the orientation sessions so that those who attend the later sessions are not at a disadvantage.
If you are in a school other than CAS the above might not be true, however. I’m not sure how registration works for Stern, Tisch, etc.

Oh good that is such a relief! Im at Tisch (musical theater), does anyone know how registration works for this school/program? I don’t think orientation is until the week before school, so do we just register online?

Similar question. This thread is almost a year old, but I’ll try anyway. I’m an incoming Tisch graduate student for Fall 2011. I was wondering if I need to contact an adviser to register online through Albert. If so, can i do this online (email) or over the phone. I’m not in the city till August, but if necessary can make the trip. I’ve called multiple places on campus and received different answers. Any help is welcome.

Hi,

I was informed by Tisch staff that Tisch undergrad and grad students will be notified sometime in early August via email on registration procedures. Registration would be online in early August.

At the orientation, do people get priority for being there at NYU to sign up for classes? Or will the registration be online?

If I am reading your question right, it is a good question about people who are not able to attend the summer orientation sessions. It is in your best interest to contact the NYU Advisement Office if you cannot attend the orientation to find out what arrangements will be made for you. I would ask for as early a time as possible (say the first day of each session that registration is open to orientation attendees).

[NYU > Undergraduate Advisement > Find Your Advisor](<a href=“Undergraduate Advisement”>Undergraduate Advisement)

Normally, as CASmom mentioned last year in Post #2, each orientation session will have a number of slots for each class so no one class is completely closed after Orientation Session #1. I have to advise people who are reading this and plan to attend the orientation sessions in the summer, BE PREPARED with what you want to sign up for. Apparently, for some of the hard to get into classes (for my S, it was Writing the Essay and Chinese, non-heritage), the classes were already closed shortly after the meeting with the advisor began. So how fast your advisor keys in your class of choice makes a difference for who gets in among the people in your orientation session.

So, if you can, see which schedule fits you best and decide which classes/ professors you want to take. Let the advisor know to key in the schedule asap. Also, be prepared with alternate choices, in case your first choices get filled early.

Obviously, if you do not care whether you take Writing the Essay in the fall or in the spring; in other words, the specific classes you will get into or if you really need to discuss your schedule first to hear your advisor’s suggestions, then you should not rush but just take your chances with what classes you get into.

Hi evolving

A related question. Will the students be assigned advisors beforehand so that the students have some kind of interaction with them through emails before they begin advising on registration for each student.

anialways,

The answer was “no” for last year. My S found out the name of the advisor once he got to the orientation. Even so, he only met briefly with a faculty member who was supposed to be his advisor for the orientation session but the person disappeared after a brief intro. My S then got someone new who gave him some wrong advisement info. So the quality of advisement really depends on who you get.

I believe these are also only temporary advisors for the summer orientation. At least, that was what happened with my S. He met his permanent advisor in the fall and the advisor was much better.

I have to amend this by saying that my S was able to find out the name of his permanent advisor shortly after the orientation session. My S actually emailed him in the summer to try to deal with a class registration issue that was not resolved during orientation and he got an answer from the permanent advisor. Much better service than the temporary advisor he got for the orientation.

Hi evolving

Thank you for the info. It does sound like a complicated process specially for students coming from outside. The good thing is that my daughter will only be able to make it to the fall orientation and so hopefully will be assigned a permanent advisor. I just hope she is able to choose the right combination with the time slots that match and most importantly are conducted by the professors whom everybody else holds in high esteem. What a shame it would be to go all the way from home and pay so much money and not be able to match all of the above in the best possible combination.

So does this mean we could hear from a permanent advisor between June and August.

Anial - I don’t know what school your D is in, and it does vary a lot. You may want to call the school (Stern, CAS, etc). I remember my D in Tisch had online class registration last summer, before she had met or even talked to an advisor…and orientation for Tisch was not until Welcome Week. She had to work on registration day so I got to be her and do the registration…She did not really have any choices on what classes to take - Tischies do studio, Writing the Essay (2 semesters) and Theatre Studies/Theatre Production (1 semester each). BUT to get the premium times and instructors was the issue. I got to do spring registration too, since she had studio all day. Her registration for next fall is tomorrow and she has studio so I am expecting a “please mom” phone call tonight!

Sorry, I was responding to Post #6 and was assuming the question was for CAS registration and summer orientation sessions. I forgot Anialways’ D? is attending Stern. That is a separate school and a separate process that I was not trying to address.

Than you writestuff54 for the info. My daughter is in Stern so we will have to wait and see how things work out for her. Keeping our fingers crossed…
