When do we found out how and when to register for classes? I know that the early registration date is the 20th, but i’ve yet to recieve anything from Penn other than my PennKey information. Has everyone else recieved other mailings?

I have not received anything as of yet. Could someone who has already gone through the process please explain in detail how class registration works? Thanks.

You'll soon get information on who your academic and peer advisors are. In the College (I'm not sure how other schools work), you'll have to fill out a survey type thing for your academic advisor to help him get to know you, what you hope to get out of a Penn Education, etc. Then, before you register for classes, you are REQUIRED to talk to your advisor about your courses. I talked to mine for about 30 minutes on the phone last year, and he was very helpful. Then they'll take you off of registration hold and you can register through Penn inTouch, a website which will be explained to you more later (although it's pretty easy to figure out).

Oh! I left something very important out. Registration is NOT... I repeat... NOT First Come, First Served. You have a few weeks to pick your ideal schedule, and then it closes for about a week, and then spits out everyone's schedules. So don't worry about making a time to talk to your advisor the first day registration starts. I talked to mine like 3 days before registration ended, and still had time to put in my class requests, and got almost all of the classes I wanted (actually I did get all my classes, I just didn't get all of my ideal times).

thanks so much, fluffhead!!! you've been so helpful on all of these threads :)

don't panic with registration. i did, and it wasn't worth it :)

here's the deal -- if you go to the registrar's website (www.upenn.edu/registrar i believe it is), you can check out the courses offered (look under freshman fall 2005 course timetable). it lists profs, times, credit info, etc. check with your department to see what courses are required for freshmen year. then, try to make a sample template of your classes to see what could work. once registration opens, you'll be ahead of the ballgame. also, with advanced registration, if you don't get into a class, don't panic. spots WILL open up. i had trouble scheduling labs last year, but if you keep looking for openings, you'll find one. this will all make more sense once registration opens. any other questions, IM me at krtrumpet182 and i'd be happy to help ya out.

Last week I logged on to PennPortal and found out that my advisor's name was already there. I sent him an email since then and haven't got the reply yet. Is it too early to communicate with my advisor? Any suggestions?

Should I talk to another professor (called premed advisor) as well if I plan to be a premed? (I'm glad my advisor has PhD+MD though.) How can I access someone called 'premed advisor'?

"(actually I did get all my classes, I just didn't get all of my ideal times)."

Does that mean that people can get stuck with classes at 9am? Can u change ur class times after u get them?

heathcliff - usually people tend to put their first choice of time for a class, but select the option that will place you in any open section if your first choice isn't available. You can get stuck with 9am classes that way, but you can also switch to any other open sections when registration opens up again, and until add period ends during the semester. Sometimes it takes a while for things to open up, and you might need to check several times a day, but eventually you'll probably get a better time.
It's also only usually discussion sections and things that you don't get your first choice for, so you'll only end up being inconvenienced once a week.

Valecollegorian, how did you find out who your advisor was?

Quaker, are you in teh college? I called them today, and they said that they're mailing out advisor info this week, so we should get it by next week.

My advisor's name is now in the bottom left of my PennPortal page. He is a bioengineering professor, so some of his info (e.g. field of concentration, degree, research, ...) is on the bioengineering website.

I get "No Advisors found. Contact your school if you don't have an advisor." Should I really contact my school, or they just haven't finished assigning advisors?

Lauraanne- if I remember correctly, freshman don't have the option of just putting "any open section"

Honestly though guys? Advance Registration SO doesn't matter. People will always drop classes the first week, so I've only ONE TIME had a class that I really tried to get into which I couldn't, and it's one of the most popular classes in my major (As in, the school pays to send to any presidential library to do research)...

Don't stress. Look at your options, make your choices- DO Advance Registration, but don't hyperventilate about it.

How does registration work if you have to take placement tests, like in a language?

If you have to take a language placement (are waiting for an AP score), you can still register.. you just pick the level you think you will place into (look at the syllabus/website for the class). If you don't end up placing into that class (you place higher or lower.) you can always switch during the add/drop period.

umm FYI a HUGE packet will be coming in the mail (i got mine today) with your academic advisor info as well as your peer advisor info.

When you see this: "001 LEC MWF 10-11AM, LEC M 4-5PM THOMSON E LEC T 5-6PM"

Does it mean that the class has a lecture at each of those times???

Yep, sadly. I don't know what class you're looking at there, but my guess is Physics? I know Physics classes have 5 lectures a week. Four of them are normal class lectures, and the fifth is a lab lecture.

Heads up: Although you still must schedule lab lectures for Physics/Chem, people rarely go to them... they're pretty worthless. You'll figure that out on your own though...

Well, but we don't have labs for physics anymore so would we still have lab lectures?
