the juniors at my school got their class rings yesterday, which means we are officially seniors. im wondering, how many of you actually get class rings? how common are they? and do they have a lot of traditions?

At my school, each junior is required to get a class ring. They can choose from the metals being used (like gold or silver), but the stone (semi-precious) have to be red (school color). As far as being common or not, most of the schools I know have them, but I don't think it's required for them.

I didn't get one... I mean, they're like $600-700 and I know I'd never wear it. I did buy a diamond and alexandite ring which I had engraved with my high school and the year of my graduation. At our school it's fairly common to buy but not common to wear. They're kind of dorky, IMO. I doubt I'll get one from my college... diamonds are a girls best friend not cheap yet overpriced created stones. Plus, sentiment... what's sentiment?

they tried to sell them to us freshman year but we haven't had the chance to buy one since

Our school doesn't even have them.

they are so overrated......i was gonna buy one, then i decided that they were dumb, freaking huge! (its like 10 rings in one! way too big size) and i didn't wanna spend 150 on a ring, even though my parents would have paid for it.......

Class rings are offered at my school, but I have yet to hear of a single person ever buying one. They prematurely commemorate an ultimately insignificant event with an exorbitantly priced amalgam of polished scrap metal and synthetic polymer. Mere words cannot express the loathing I feel for objects of such gratuitous opulence. The system is a profligate waste, worse even than the prom.

spits on ground

You know, until I read this thread, I had never even heard of class rings.

its just for dum bas s [rich] kids that wanna show off that they actually graduated from high school

lol class rings.. they sound funny (i've never heard of them). they remind me of those 'babysitter club' rings i bought (ages ago) and it had 'friends forever' engraved on it lol.

(btw nerd, you can actually type in 'ass' lol)

My school we can get whatever style or stone color we want, about half the kids get them, I did and it didn't cost $500. I like it. I wear it alot but I'm not sure I will in college.

Wow you guys are getting ripped off! I got one 2 years ago for $180 and its a really nice ring. My sister is getting one this year which is about 280. I wear mine alot, its fun to have.

My school has them, but I didn't get one, because I already had a varsity jacket, which was less expensive, more practical, and more meaningful because the letter was something I earned.

You get the ring in your sophomore year in my school. We got ours today too. Most people buy them through the school and that is super duper expensive. I might get one from Walmart or some other cheaper jewelry store. There are sooo many styles that are offered, you don't have to get the huge rings in my school. Only the guys get that.

My ring was $400-$500, and it's a simple 10K white gold princess ring with a round royal cut ruby.

Class rings are quite popular, and we buy/get them at the beginning of junior year.

I love my ring to death (but then again, I have an obsession with white metal jewelry, especially white gold). Around the stone says my high school, one side is a engraving of a tiny dragon with my middle name on the panel, and the other side is my school crest with "WARRIORS" (our mascot) on that panel.

In the inside, my name is printed in cursive.

At my school, everyone wears them.

Too gaudy, too big.

Get one after college and leave it on your desk to look good.

$500? Let me rephrase that. FIVE-HUNDRED DOLLARS?! Does this benefit your school at all? Does anybody pass on buying one because they can't afford to?

yeah a few people at my school didnt buy junior rings b/c they were too expensive, but then again, rings at my school are all the same and all cost 120. they're supposed to symbolize our becoming the seniors at my school. this might sound corny to alot of you, but my school has alot of traditions, and this is one of them. ours isnt that big.

We have a "ring day" ceremony for the juniors, but as the years go on it's turning more and more into "rose day" as less people each year are purchasing rings. (At the ceremony, you are handed a rose if you declined to buy the ring, which is $450 for a single ruby)

They're not very popular. And I actually think getting handed a rose is classier. Even if I purchase a ring, I'd rather be handed a rose lol...

oo' A class ring...I got the magazine stuff that shows you different types of ring. oo;;; Heh, :] A rose? [gives ReinDetriot a rose] Xd Congratulations! Just kidding. :] is hyper
