Hi there,
I am trying to raise my GPA in preparation for some required classes that are not honors. I’m taking Honors Precalculus this year and thinking of taking Honors Algebra I over the summer to raise my GPA. In middle school, I had already taken Honors Algebra I, only not for high school credit. So, this order of math classes is not chronological. Will colleges glance at this and condescendingly think this person is only trying raise his or her GPA, then not be as willing to accept the person? Or should I take it to raise my GPA, and my chances of college will not be affected when they look at the odd order of math classes?
To me it seems strange that a school will allow you to get credit for honors algebra 1 taken after honors precalculus. I I would check with your guidance counselor first. My kids high school does not give credit nor list classes taken before 9th grade on the transcript. However it is implied that in order to start math past algebra 1 then it was taken prior to high school. My high school would not give credit for it after you already took geometry, algebra 2 and precalculus.
Yes I do think a college admissions person would find it strange it take after more advanced math classes. I don’t see it as condescending. They could ask either you or the high school for a reason and I doubt they would like the answer that you took it simply to raise your gpa. It could also potentially prevent your guidance counselor from checking the most rigorous box because they know for you that it is going backwards instead of forward with the math curriculum. Honestly I would talk to your guidance counselor and see if there is a better option.
Probably. Which, let’s face it, is exactly what you are trying to do.
Regardless, I highly doubt your HS would let you do it, or certainly would not include it in your GPA calculation. Additionally, any single class will likely not change a GPA enough to be meaningful.
