Is it worth it to try and have classes only Monday thru Thursday? Do most ppl have classes five days a week? How long would you say that someone with a normal freshman courseload (4 classes if I'm correct) has class each day? Are classes that 2+ hours generally a pain in the ass?

Free Fridays will be great (I finally have them next semester). It allows you to start you weekend on Thursdays guilt free. You could be like most people and go out Thursday nights, but its easier to do that when you don't have class the next day. If you can do it, go for it.

Most first semester freshmen have 4-5 classes. Most college students and Wharton students will probably have 4. Science majors and some engineering will have 4.5 (one lab). Many engineers will have 5 classes (4 and 2 labs).

If you are taking an intro science class or intro language class you will almost always have class on Friday. If you are in Wharton you won't have any lectures on Friday (unless you pick a MWF Math 104 or something like that) but you might get stuck with recitations.

Some classes get kind of old after 50 minutes. In my 1.5 hour classes I found myself checking the time after 50 minutes elapsed and started losing interest from there. The 1.5 hour classes are doable though. If you are going to be in a 3 hour class you better hope for an interesting professor or it can be very boring. 3 hour labs, however, let you out when you are done, so don't worry about those getting boring.

6 hour labs, however, suck (most of the time)

but yeah most freshmen have class 5 days a week

when you're an upperclassman you can find creative ways to schedule your classes into fewer days

for example i had 5 classes in 3 days (no m/w) two semesters ago, and will only have mon-wed classes this semester =D (and still 5 credits too!)

Thank - great info. I'm in the college btw. What are you class blocks like? Do you generally have one class before noon and one class in the late afternoon or do u guys schedule a very afternoons?

and lucky for me i got a 4 on my AP French test last year so I don't have to take the intro classes if i choose not to, hence the possible free friday.

hm usually it's mixed between morning and afternoon, with a break somewhere around lunchtime - but that's up to you, some people prefer to eat late and get all their classes done earlier

again it also depends on the number of hours of class you have, because 1 credit courses can be anywhere from 3 hours a week to 6... sometimes this means you'll have early mornings (like 8, 8.30 am, which probably doesn't sound bad yet but it really is), and sometimes late evenings (latest class i've had went until 7.30 pm)

Um no classes here start til 9. That might only be an hour later than 8, but it makes all the difference.

so would it be weird to have classes monday thru thursday with all of your classes starting at 12PM at the earliest and end like 6:30 at the latest. I got made a mock schedule with two days where i just have class from 1-4. and other 2 class is from 12-1 and then 430-630. would that be an atypical thing to do?

actually there are recitations (usually chem or math) that can begin at 8 or 8.30 am

or, chem 022...

and nsci (naval science, not nursing) courses start at 7.30 am (but very few people take them)

on the other hand, cgs classes can go as late as 10 pm

that schedule is pretty nice, but you may not enjoy having the late class your very first semester

What's bad about a late class in the first semester?

I'm currently trying to decide which Intro to Russian section I should take. The one that is spread out over 5 days sucks a bit because I don't want to have class until 6 PM on Friday. The alternative would be 6-9 PM on MW...any thoughts?

^6-9 MW will kill you. It's right in the middle of dinner, clubs, and other stuff, not to mention the fact that you will probably be tired by that point. Ending at 6PM Fridays isn't the best either. You just have to pick which fits you best.

RZA, your schedule seems fine. It's not too different from what I'm doing next semester.

Some people can do night classes, some can't. I usually can, but it has backfired before...

My semester is looking insane - I'm considering jacking up my number of credits to boost my gpa for law school. I'm thinking about adding courses in Spanish and Italian. It's going to take away my free friday though :(

oh and what is a recitation exactly?

In departments like Math, Econ, and Chemistry for intro classes you have 2-3 hours of lecture each week and you have a recitation section where you have a smaller class with ~15 people taught by a TA where you either have quizes (math) or you go over homework and practice problems. If you don't have quizes or homework due the majority of students skip recitation.

oic so when i schedule math104 for example, i'll have to add both a lecture and a recitation to my schedule, right?

yea, you have both. math recitations usually start between 8 and 10 AM and will have quizes.
