Hey guys

I got my class schedule for next semester. I am an upcoming senior and these classes are my last chance to impress colleges. I planned on doubling up on both English and Science and taking 7 academic classes, but I got my schedule today and it turns out I am only taking one science (modern physics, which isn't for an AP exam but will still be challenging probably).

My classes will be:

AP Calculus
AP Literature
Poetry
Modern Physics
Global Conflict (history)
Judaics (required, otherwise I probably wouldn't take it)

A classmate of mine will be applying to several of the schools I'm applying to and I know for a fact he will be taking two AP sciences and probably other advanced courses too, so I need another class to compete. Do you think taking Statistics or a second history would help? If an elective is available (yoga, art, photography, etc.) would it look better than nothing?

Don't focus too much on the other kid from your school who will be applying to some of the same schools you are. Look rather to the impression you want to create of yourself with the AdComs at those schools.

I actually think that your schedule looks pretty intersting as it stands now...an odd mix of science and humanities. Of course, taking another advanced course would be good if you can fit it in (both scheduling-wise and work load-wise) but I would ask yourself if it isn't a bit ambitious to have 7 hardcore academic classes going for the fall of your senior year (the answer will depend very much on the rigor of your school and your own stamina). You do want to make a good showing first term senior year but that includes being able to do the work and pull out some decent grades, and if you are trying to juggle 7 acadamic classes that can rapidly become pretty challenging.

So generally, I would say, if the schedule at your school can accomodate it and you think you're up to the challenge, I would add whichever of the 2 you mentioned (Statistics or another history) based on what you are more interested in. And, if you can't schedule that, do add an elective. You probably shouldn't leave the period open.

Good luck!
