class selection

so i was lucky enough to place out of my school's intro bio class, which, by the way is a major weed out course. i'm now contemplating signing up for either cell/molecular bio or biochemistry. which class counts for the med-school biology requirement?

also, do med schools accept AP credit for chemistry, because my school awards AP credit (6 pts for gen chem) for those who complete organic chemistry their freshman year. should i take a higher level course to be safe, such as physical chem? thanks!

1) as long as there is a lab associated with the bio course, it doesn't matter what you take.

2) Make sure that the bio chem has a Biology course heading. My school had a department of Biochemistry, and as such, biochem related courses had a BIOC course heading instead of the BIOS course heading that classes under the School of Biological sciences had.

3) Big no on the AP credit (haven't you been on the board long enough to know that?). My personal feeling on the issue is that you should retake gen chem then take organic. If you don't have a choice in the matter and are forced to take organic b/c of the AP credit and they won't let you retake gen chem, then you must take p-chem and analytical chem (or some other upper level chem with lab) in order to fulfill the requirements for a year of general chemistry with lab. The problem is that both of those classes are notoriously difficult, and neither one has any application in medical school or on the MCAT, so they're essentially worthless.

We were always able to use biochem for that second year of genchem.

actually my premed advisor mentioned to our class (premed seminar class) yesterday that someone got flat out rejected by NYU medical school because NYU didnt accept his AP credit for general chem lab

yeah...damn

well, my biochem class is in the BIOC (biochem) department at my school, so i might end up taking like cell biology then either genetics or physiology. and i'm probably going to end up taking p-chem...damn again.

i only brought up the AP credit because my premed advisor says that most med schools accept AP credit for gen chem. i guess not...?

Even if it's true, the problem is that "most" isn't good enough. You have to apply too broadly for "most" to be a reasonable goal to shoot for.

yeah university of montana medical school or something...anyway, i'm taking cell biology, it's been settled. pchem is also an interesting course, so what the hell, eh?

I didn't say that "almost all" wasn't good enough -- it probably would be. "Most" is not. Feel free to investigate policies on your own.

As has been discussed previously, I had AP Credit for genchem. I took one semester's worth of genchem anyway and used another semester of biochem to fulfill two years worth of chemistry.
