Class sessions closed?

Our son will be a freshman at Whitman. In looking over the catalog and schedule, it appears that most of the classes he would like to take this fall are full. He's interested in a politics-environmental studies major, and Bio 130, Econ 177, Politics 124, and Env.St. 120 are all closed. Do they sometimes add more sessions? or make more room in the 100-level classes?

I know that this forum is not that active, but I don't do facebook.
Thanks for any help.

Hi washmother, it’s great that your son is headed to Whitman and I wouldn’t worry yet about the closed sections. I was reading in the Whitman Pioneer that they are going to be adding new sections and hiring more visiting faculty over the summer to accommodate the incoming freshmen. The upperclassmen register first and then they can assess the need. My son is a rising sophomore and got all the classes he wanted as a freshman except dance and fly-fishing. In fact, second semester all Calculus II classes were full but another section was added when several students needed to get in. Also talking with the professor can work to get an determined student into a class. They do work with the students, certainly an advantage to being in a small school. I hope your son has as good a time as mine has so far!

Sometimes they reopen classes when it’s time for freshmen to sign up. They’re closed now for sophomores and up. If there’s a class he’s really interested in, he should email the professor as that’s how he’ll get on the wait list. The upperclassmen email the professors even before their registration time just in case their class fills up before registration time; that way they’re already on the wait list.

Thanks, bopambo and kolijma, for the reassurance and advice.
