<p>Columbia requires every first year in Columbia College to take a great books type class called Literary Humanities (or LitHum), and a writing class. These will be small and discussion based. They also all take a lecture class called Frontiers of Science, which breaks into assigned sections that will also be small. So, a first year will be guaranteed some small classes. On the other hand, these are not all taught by professors. Many are led by advanced grad students. That's not always bad -- some of these teachers are sincerely interested in helping students adjust to college life. It's luck of the draw, as you don't get to choose.</p>
<p>Beyond that, you might look at the directory of classes online, which will show you actual class enrollments. That way, you could pick the type of course that might interest you and see how large it is. My son's first year, he had classes that ranged in size from 10 to 40 to several hundred.</p>
