class size

I was reading this thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=160655 comparing McGill to American universities and came across a discussion of class size.

This leads me to ask about the class sizes at McGill. I understand that the intro classes are large, lecture-style (right?), but what about upper-level undergrad classes? Can a student have class experiences with a lot of discussion and interaction with professors?

And what about undergraduate research opportunities?

Upper level undergrad class size varies depending on major and whether it's a required class for the major or not. I've had classes with a handful of student (literally, though 5 registered students is the minimum required to ensure there is a class), as soon as U2 (third year from a Freshman perspective). More likely, a 300-level (U2) class can have from 20 to 150 students. 400 and 500 level classes (U3 and graduate level courses that can be taken as undergrad without special permission) will tend to be much smaller. In my experience, in math (so don't extend this to say, bio), 400 level classes had usually 15-30 students.

There are undergraduate research opportunities (such as summer NSERC programs), but it's up to the student to seek them out usually. That means inquiring about them by talking to professors, and fellow, experienced students, such as in the departmental undergrad societies. In fact, I can't stress this enough to new students: go ask advice from your peers. Often, they know the undergrad experience much better than the advisors when it comes to classes and how to get involved in research.

Lecture style with conferences just like you would find at Princeton, Harvard, Yale.

Blobof, would you happen to know anything about the class size for engineering (specifically chem. eng.) students?

I'm afraid not, and I don't think I can venture a guess.

like all eng. classes.. you start out entry level (300+) and it gets smaller and smaller as you become more specialized

Are the intro classes like 400+ students or something closer to reasonable?

depends.. if you have classes in Leacock 132 (like gen chem 12) it holds 600, but you can choose the smaller class on tues/thurs, which is a little over 300.

justatest, are you a currently an engineering student, or are you just familiar with all that jazz?

im u0 mecheng

would you mind if I pm'd you some questions about McGill/the faculty of engineering?

sure, just keep in mind I've only completed my first year, but I can tell you all I know
