Would you consider the classes at Rice small? (my classes in high school are like 25+ students). i heard its around 10-19 students per class, which is similar to Emory's, although Emory is a bigger school. but Rice has a very small student/ teacher ratio, like 5:1....

The typical intro classes are going to be big, and they average at around a 100 students. The science classes, such as intro chem and intro bio, are going to be more like 150-200. However, this is the case at every single national university (except maybe Caltech, the only university smaller than Rice), and in most of the universities, the lecture classes are going to be bigger. For example, my friend at Cornell told me that his bio/chem lecture class was 400 students (twice the size as Rice’s), and I heard that Michigan’s lecture classes can get as big as 800 students.

However, after the basic intro classes, the class size begins to drop quite dramatically. Rice only has 5-6 large lecture halls (largest holding about 230) on campus; most of the other classrooms are smaller.

By the way, the median class size here is 15 students.

I myself am used to very small classes since I went to a small high school, and I am very satisfied with my class experiences here at Rice.

Class size oscillates dramatically depending on your department. Many upper division courses in the humanities and social sciences will have as few as three or four students.

Median class size is actually 11; 15 is the mean.

I’ve haven’t had any classes with more than 40 people since freshman year, and most have been under 20.

At emory, all of my intro classes have 90-100 kids…I think the average class size here is 30 (still a lot of kids)…the worst part about Emory an class sizes, is because it is a large school that tries to have small classes, sometimes you won’t get the class you want…
