Class Size?

I am intending to be an Accounting major. I just would like to know how big the classes are. Do the teachers actually know you or are you just a name on a list? How many lecture hall classes are there?

I have 2 daughters at UMD–their experience has been from 7 people in a class to >350 for a class (D1 was a TA for a large science class). The more AP credits you bring with you to UMD (and are able to avoid the traditional large lecture courses), the fewer huge classes you will have. Also, for most lecture courses that are large, there will be a discussion section each week, taught by a TA, where you get additional clarification, practice, etc. If you want the teachers to actually know you, you need to make an effort. Go to their office hours, if nothing else but to ask pertinent questions, get clarification before exams, etc. You can be as anonymous as you want to be, or have professors of large lecture classes know you by name. It’s your choice. But for a student to say that he felt like a “number”, I maintain that it was because the student did not make the effort.
