Class Sizes - Average

Hello All! So Chapel Hill is my top-reasonable choice for a school. I really like it there and in fact my Aunt and Uncle are both professors there (though I will not specify what they teach).

For me, when it comes to choosing a college, I want a medium sized feel. Places like UGA are just way too crowded for me.

At UGA and Georgia Tech (the two top choices of my peers), some basic classes like Chemistry have classes of upwards of 200 kids in a room at a time. I was thinking about topping off at like 50 kids at a time.

At Chapel Hill, are most classes, sub-50 kids per class?

I am thinking of majoring in either Psychology, Envrion Sci. or Business. on the Pre-med track (With a goal of Medical school).

Do you think that Proffesors at Capel Hill are rather personal with their students or tend to be distant?

Hey! I go to UNC and I actually just took Chem this past semester! So, I’ll be honest, lecture classes like Chem are normally over 200 students. Mine was 250. Classes like Psych, Bio, etc. are huge. I had a History class this semester that had over 300 kids. You’ll find few classes in the pre-med track that are sub-50. However, going to office hours of the professors is helpful, as they can help you if you do not understand and they also get to know you better. Best of luck!

Thanks! do you find a huge class like that to be stressful / impersonal?

Well, yes and no. Big classes like that leave little room for getting off-track, so you finish everything in lecture on time. However, unless you go to office hours, you never get to know your professor. I like big lecture classes because that’s my style of learning, but there are tons of classes at UNC that are small. Foreign Language classes and English classes have less than 25 students. There’s something for everyone.

Official statistics. 8% of classes are over 100 students, 85% are under 40 students. You’re gonna have larger classes regardless of your major, but they will tend to get smaller as you get into your major. There is no medium size school where you’re going to have your econ and chem 101 classes under 50 students, I can promise you that.

^ Totally agree. 101 classes are always large (and it is like that at most universities). Once you get throught those UNC has plenty of small classes.

Ah the good thing about Econ and Chem is that I will have gotten credit from those already from AP courses so I could probably dodge those bullets
