I was accepted EA, and UMich is in my top 3. My biggest concern with Michigan is how large the class sizes are, specifically in Engineering. Can I expect most of my lectures to be >100 for the first two years, or are they broken down into smaller sections. What's the average class size in a 100, 200, and 300 level course?

BUMP …want to know this too

engr 101 usually has a bit over 100 kids in lecture. what field of engineering are you interested in? that will determine the class sizes of your subsequent courses. in all honesty, i’ve never found large class sizes to be detrimental.

If you are comparing Michigan to Caltech, Harvey Mudd, Olin or Rose Hulman, then clearly classes will be large. If you are comparing Michigan to Cornell, Georgia Tech, NU or UIUC, class sizes will be comparable.

Chemical Engineering, if it matters. I’m comparing it to Carnegie Mellon.

CMU will have smaller classes, but not that much smaller. If there is a significant difference in COA, go for the more affordable option. If cost is not a concern, go for fit. CMU is as formidable as Michigan in Engineering, so you really cannot go wrong.

This isn’t as narrow as you want, but indicates university wide values in section I3: http://obp.umich.edu/wp-content/uploads/pubdata/cds/cds_2013-2014_umaa.pdf

If you search the UM website you’ll find a number of pages for the different schools. You might also try calling the individual school or college directly…or possibly call/write the provost.

It’s my understanding that ChemE is very regimented and all the ChemE kids for 1 year take all the same classes, so those classes would be presumably the size of the ChemE class that year, about 120 or so.
