Hi I’m a high school student and I’m interested in BU. But with it’s large amount of undergraduates, I was wondering about it’s class sizes.
How big are they normally?
And if they are large, do you think it affects the way you learn much?
Do you still learn just as well or do you find it bothersome?

Intrudoctory courses are usually large (~200 people), but they’re split up into discussion sections that have less than 20 people. The discussions are mostly helpful, unless you get a really bad TF. The biggest disadvantage of large classes would be that some people just won’t shut up, so sometimes I have hard time concentrating.

On the other hand, writing courses, for instance, are small (18-20) people so everyone gets to know you and you get a lot of opportunities to discuss things.

Hanita is right about everything but the only thing i might add is that even though your intro lecture classes will be pretty big, professors still encourage you to ask questions. even though it’s 200+ people you still get a chance to ask questions! just don’t over do it or people like myself and hanita get annoyed lol

So far, I’ve had a mix of small classes and large lectures at BU. My writing classes and Spanish class were all about 20 people. Obviously participation in those classes is very important. It’s easier to know the professor. Still, in the rest of my big lectures, professors are very accessible. They all have office hours that you can attend. It’s more up to you. Like Hanita said, discussion sections are smaller offshoots of lecture that meet once a week. You get your small atmosphere there, with more time to ask personalized questions and review.

I really don’t find one type easier to learn from than the other. I like smaller classes sometimes to contribute more, but learning-wise both work well. Lectures are mainly note-taking focused. Then, you try it out in discussion and/or homework. It works out the same. And yeah, there sometimes are annoying people who feel the need to shout out in lecture…but it’s not that common.

My feeling is that many college courses are best suite for lecture and thus the size isn’t important. All those classes also have a small section. Most of your classes will be small.
